Question Some Wiring help please!

Hi!

If you have been following my DLIDFIS escapades, you will know that i have a completely dead ignition system at this stage.

All my fuses seem to be in working order,as are the fuseable links.

Here is my questions:
Is the factory ignitors and coils switched with a relay? Is it just switched on straight from the ignition switch?
Lastly;Is the igntion coils,and ignitors protected by a fuse?If so,where can i find it?

Thanks!

Karis the f$%%^*& frustrated Rotary owner

I am not looking at the wiring diagram (which you can find at iluvmyrx7.com), but all of the circuit protection in the car is in the fuse panel and the 3 fuseable links on your fender.

If all of the fuses are whole, and the fuseable links have continutiy, stop looking there.

Also, I don't belive these cars have a main relay, so they are switched on right from the key, but check the wiring diagam.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Ok,so if its doesnt have a relay, then i have burned the contact on my ignition switch?
Geez, what alott of fun this is starting to turn out.

I guess i`ll start by testing all my ignitors tonight, hopefully i`ll have 2 that are working from the 2 factory and 2 aftermarket ones i have.

After installing dlidfis on my car I found out that I flooded it and that was the reason it would not start. Tach would not work since the plugs were not firing.

You're tach doesn't give a **** if the plugs are firing or not. It runs off the signal from the ignitor.

Ignition is working on bench

So last night i took out the Dizzy, along with the aftermarket ignitors, and the appropriate wiring.

I arranged everything on the bench, and started testing.I connected a 12V 10w globe on the ignitor.
Turned the Dizzy shaft by hand.As soon as the shafty started moving, the globe was triggered.Yeeehaaa!!

Ok,i thought, lets see what you can really do:So i hooked up a 5 volt power supply to the ignitor.Turned the shaft again, and sure as hell:The globe was triggering again.Just as accurate as before, the only diffrence was the globe lighting up a bit more dim.

Mmmm!So i`am happy to say, that both the Tp500 ignitors are working!

Tonight i`ll put everything back in the car, with a fresh set of plugs and see if it want s to start.

REVHED is correct. My trailing plugs were filled with an oil+gas mixture in the cavity from one of my attempts to un-flood a recent rebuild that had been sitting for months. As the engine was cranking, the tach was reading a tiny bit above zero. A quick change is spark plugs and it fired up in like 2 seconds (a new record for this particular engine hehe).

karism, on of my friend's 1st gens had a burned contact in the ignition switch. It literaly started glowing orange inside. He swapped in a new one it it works fine.

Good luck on sorting out your wiring problem. Be sure to add a relay for true battery voltage instead of whatever resistance the ignition switch introduces to the circuit.

Angry

Well, more bad news!

The night before i put the battery on charge,so that it would be fully charged.

Last night i put all the ignition things back in the car.(Dizzy, ignitors, relays)
I wired up the ignitors to 2x 40A Bosch relays.

So instead off using the stock feed to the ignitors and coils, its now powered by 2 relays getting fed from the battery.

I fitted a set of brand new NGK plugs.

Set the timing static.Checked all the connectors.Made double sure that the plug wires were assigned to the right plugs.

Key in the ignition.

Swinged it.It turned,and turned,and turned.

Not even a hint of starting. Not a puff or a splatter,or nothing. It`s sounding like it doesnt have have plugs in!

So i went over everything again, changing timing, making sure the ignitors had power.

Checked if the trailing wire firing.Yip,nice spark.Havent gotten round to checking the leading yet.

So now,i seriously want to hear your opinions!
