Solex Carb?

what is your opinion on solex carbs?
My neighbor gave me a Solex carb but Iv'e never heard of them. Im running a weber 45 sidedraft, but it is a loaner carb. Would the Solex perform as well as the weber? The Solex doesn't have any identifying numbers on it, he said it came from an old Datsun. I could put a picture if I knew how? Well any help or info would be apreciated.

They sound very complex and could be a pain in the *** if not maintained religiously.

Here's what I found:

The SOLEX carburetors are extremely complex in function and assembly. There are a multitude of teeny, weeny holes, passages, and valves that can be clogged or restricted by dirt, scale, or rust in the fuel. If you fail to keep the fuel system religiously clean by regular fuel filter replacements or inspections, then you can expect big trouble from SOLEX carburetors.

The only other serious problems that befall SOLEX carburetors are worn throttle shafts and leaking accelerator pump diaphragms. You can replace the diaphragm quite easily. The throttle shafts are a different case, however. The folks at MIKUNI don't even sell the shafts separately because they consider the operation to be too precise to allow amateurs to attempt it.

This short dissertation may not seem like much compared to the SU section which is about 10 times as long. You must seriously consider the relative simplicity of the SU carbs versus the multi-stage systems and complex operation of the SOLEXES.

Sounds like you should sell it on ebay to fund getting your OWN Weber.

Solex and Mikuni PHH series of side-drafts are the same.

in my opnion, I would KEEP the Solex. Let me know your set-up and I'll get you jetted correctly, it will blow your mind how much more smooth the solex/Mikuni is over its supposed Weber equivilent.

In the world of Sidedraught carbs this is the way to go.
(Down-draft, ala Weber IDA is a completely different story)

If you decide not to use it, I'll buy it from you.

ALSO note there are a few "HITACHI" branded carbs which are also interchangable with the Solex/Mikunis Phh. I'd love to find one of these too...

to help Identify this cute little solex, look inside the carb from where air enters the carb. se if you can see numbers scribed into the venturies or chokes, or "restrictor tubes" should be like a 38, or 41, or whatever,

then open up the top plate, and let us know all the numbers you see,

Solex and Mikuni were like sister companies. Solex is the Italian version of Mikuni (and is actually more rare to find). My brother ran some 40's on his FB. It ran like $hit though cause the jettings were wrong. Here's a pic of the car with a stripped stock carb with Racing Beat air cleaner and a Mariah IMSA Wide Body Kit. The car is Primer in the pics.

These shots were taken at Guam's First Drift Event. That's my FC in the background.
