I recently recieved from DMV my new licence plates (Pictured in my avitar)
I live on long island in ny and i havent met a person yet who knows what it means.......

They ask me if me and my girlfriend are the "2 Rotors", if its a rock group, what year porsche it is....

The RX7 is and ICON and more people should know what it means.

Also why do RX8 people think their car has a 4 Cyl????

it's just life. i used to educate people when they asked how old my z was or something like that. i admit i kinda gave up. most poeple think i'm mad when i thell them "it;s supposed to do that" or "yes i know it sounds weird". i'm sorry i've let you down...

Yea, I pick my battles with the questions, but I too have lost the motivation to try to educate, it's normally just a nod if they're in the vicinity of understanding..

Yep, number of cylinders is key on the ticket. Just say 2. Or fill in the part for a 4 banger & let it go.

When I registered mine at the DMV I told the woman at the couter that it didn't have any cylinders (the form asks for the # of cylinders in the engine). She proceeded to treat me like and idiot. So I said to just put 2, since that is probably what it's listed under. Sure enough, when she put the VIN number it came up as a 2 cylinder car. So who's so smart now huh? She got real quiet after that.

The whole 2 cylinder thing could work to your advantage.

One of the things insurance companies do is "hey, if you engine is smaller than what your car can handle, the underpowered is easy to insure!"

 

My Plate spells RX SEVEN when i park people still will ask What kind of car is that?
One time I park start walking to the door some guy says' is that a z car his girlfried says it says rx7 on the plate. Thats a dumb person!

 

a hot looking air head asked in a loud voice, "Is that a mazda?" pointing to my 914 porsche . Then my red neck brother in-law snickerred that it was a VW untill he saw the engine. All this was in the early 80's.

And now it is 2005 and I have the less prestigious although better RX-7, and I correct people by saying that it is a vintage ferrari.

And then there was the time the Sear's battery installer was trying to tell me that my car needed a tune up. Yet he didn't know about the two rotor, 2 plugs per rotor, firing three times per revelution. And to think he was a highly trained Sears Customer Service Tech.!!

 

i was talking to a shop owner and i told him that my car has no pistons and he said man then its a peice of **** so i took him for a ride and i know he wont say that again lol

RX-8 people don't think there cars have 4 cylinders,maybe one or two dumb *** RX-8 owners you met thought that,but they are really the minority.

My friend Steve didn't believe me that I got an RX-7. When I showed him he was like "Oh that's one of the older ones" and I was yeah let me take you for a ride. Afterwards he said, "**** this ****** thing would whoop the hell outta my Firebird" Hence the name FirebirdSlayer LOL

 

my freind saw 4 spark plug wires going to the motor (2 per rotor) and hes like.... "so its like a 4-cylinder" . this is after i get done telling him the basics of a rotary

 

maybe it's cause im an engineering student and everyone i hang out with is either an EE nerd or a mech.eng geek, but ive never had anyone try to tell me something stupid about the car, other than a comp.sci saying that "rotary engines arent that good, the fuel economy sucks"..

he was right about the gas.

 

When I go racing on the slip it asks the number of cylinders. I allways put 0... I was at a bar a few weeks ago and some girl was talking **** about this dudes SA cause after talking to me he pealed out of the pparking lot. She called it a crppy rice burner. Then had the oddasity to call my car a porsh. Needless to say I flipped out and gave her a history lesson, and why it's Porsche. It's someones name say it right!!!!

Since I installed the widebody, only one person who has walked up and talked to me, knew what it is. When I mentioned that he was the first to get it right, he said he knew what it was from some video game that he played.

Usual guesses are an old Porsche or a 2xx Z.

Fun part is when I pop the hood to show it off. Looks like a powdercoated beer keg with a very strange carb on it,(Mikuni). It's even more confusing to them if they have heard it idling before I show off the engine bay. The bp idles like a V8 with a big cam in it and sometimes the car rocks back and forth at idle. Love the dumbfounded looks on thier faces.

 

An old friend of mine stopped by shortly after I got my car and was asking me what it was. I told him it was an Rx-7. He proceeded to talk **** about Japanese cars, and then telling me that he ran an 18 second quarter mile in his car, and that he was going to do a cold air intake and exhaust and that it would get him into the 15's. He eventually asked me if it had a four cylinder. I told him it was a two rotor, explained it to him, and then after he gave me the "you're a dumbass" look for five minutes proceeded to ask me if it had four pistons or not. That was the last time I've spoken to him.

Yea,even though there are 6 combustion surfaces on a 2 rotor,having 4 sparkplugs and a 4 banger-ish exhaust tone tends to get most people thinking its a 4 cylinder.
Plus our power output is around those lines,although modern 4 bangers have us pretty much beat in stock form.Most 4 bangers of the 70s-80s couldnt hang with a 12A or SE however.......
