smoking at weird times

My car smokes when I first start it up. For like the first two revs it spews out a wicked amount of white smoke that smells like gas an oil. Then if I'm flooring it when I shift another huge plume comes out. I have the rats nest removed and I don't have any smog equiptment on it so I don't think that it could be a crank-case ventilation problem. Anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds like side seals if the smoke is blue. White smoke usually means your water seals are bad. Is it using any water?

It's means your oil control o-rings are worn. When you let off or shift at high rpm the sudden vacuum pulls oil past the o-rings and into the combustion chamber. The engine should still run fine for quite a while but your oil consumption will be high. Eventually you'll need a rebuild.

That sounds about right, it does eat a lot of oil. So I should be able to fix this with a gasket and o-ring set right? Another thing I thought about was I premix 2-stroke oil and was wondering it's just smoking like a 2-stroke engine, that's what the smoke looks and smells like.

What ratio are you premixing at? I'd say the o-rings are worn but the pre-mix could be adding to the smoking.

A gasket and o-ring set would fix the problem but who knows what sort of condition the rest of the engine is in.

150:1, .85 oz per gallon.

Where is the oil control o-ring located anyway?

My 13B does this sometimes, but not very often. When I first bought the car from my mother in law (it was pampered) it would blow some blue at high rpm shifts. But I have been riding it pretty good, and it does not seem to do it anymore. But, sometimes when I start 'er up cold, the engine will rev to 3K if i let her, and the blue will emerge. That is just a cold oil/ idle problem, which I am finding out about the gsl/se.

Anyway, there are 2 rotary shops right next to my house at Gingerman raceway; one is rotary rockets, and the other I can't remember the name of. I took my car there, they did a laying on of hands, and declared the motor free of evil spirits and whatnot. Said the rotary will blow some smoke sometimes at high rpm shifts, partially due to the oil injection and fuel still going into the engine when you let off to shift. The fluid has to go somewhere, and that some where is the exhaust. It sounded logical to me.

But, my oil consumption is not very high, so I am not too worried. Just curious, what is normal for you guys?. My engine has 100k, and never been raced. I put in about a quart a month I think. It's hard to remember right now, but I think that is close, give or take.

Yeah, mine is smoking like that too, because it sat for a year. I am going to try to use some motor honey. Are the control rings in a gasket set, or in the rebuild kit. Sorry for the hijack.

control rings will come with the gasket set....i have two cars that have done this, my 83 does it bad, i burn a quart of oil every fill up. My 88 used to do it really bad, i couldn't even drive her, there was tons of smoke. Well upon rebuild of my 88's engine, i found one oil control ring in two pieces, it was obviously the culprit of my extreme oil consumption and smoking problems

good time for a rebuild, and seriously i hate to break it to ya, but do the whole rebuild, well well worth it. i bought the gasket set only, but after all the work put into the rebuild i couldn't stomach not putting in new metal seals, so i broke down and bought the rest of the rebuild...

Hijacked!
How much does a rebuild kit run? What is involved? any machine work, or is it replacing apex seals and gaskets?
(sorry, but I/m curious!)

For a normal rebuild the only machining required is lapping of the side housings depending on how much wear they have.

The engine isn't that old. Probably only has about 15,000 miles on it, so rebuild shouldn't be necessary. Hopefully I'll be able to pull it apart and put it back together myself though, I've never put a rotary back together, I've pulled one apart but never had the pleasure of putting one back together.
