smoking....or heating?

I just got a 83 rx-7 the only problem with the car was when i had it running for about 35 40 min white smoke started coming from the counsel where the window buttons are. it smelt like wires burning. my temp guage wasn't hight at all. i turned the car off and knowticed that the rear window defrost had been on the whole time. also i asked my dad and i remembered from what he said he said that he once had problems with the catalytic convertor, and the catalytic convertor is directly beneath the counsel with the smoke. my dad told me that once he had a truck and it got so how the convertor was glowing red. I never really looked at it right when the car was off so I don't know but could this be the problem or is the fact the rear defrost on making a problem, and help would be great.

wires for defrost don't even go through the center console, they go around the drivers seat through the storage bin. verify that your windows work, go you still have the stock stereo joystick? check blow fuses......white smoke is generally electrical along with the destinctive stink

yea everything is stock besides the exhaust. They said that the drivers side window doesn't work and at first when I tried it it didn't but then my girlfriend got in and it worked so I tried it and found out you had to push it down hard and hold it. Maybe this is it? Where are the fuses located?
