slotting front engine mount? 13b swap

Hey guys I'll be swapping in a 85 se motor in my 83 GS this weekend. What part of the engine mount do I slot? The two holes on the side that bolts to the engine mounts or is it the holes up front that bolts onto the front cover? I know this is not the best method but kinda short on time and cash and I need this car on the road. Eventually I'll put an RB mount in there. By the way the front cover and oil pan from the se should be good to go right? or do I still need to swap the front cover?

Thanks, Ed

I haven't done this, but I did swap a 13b into my car using the 13b mount.

You have to slot the two holes on the side of the cross member. If you search around, you'll find specifics on slotting distance

I have put 13B engines in 12A chassis for many years but have not done this "slotting". I simply modify the 12A mount by extending it and then drill holes 20mm further back. You can optionally add an additional layer of reinforcement but it is not necessary.

Okay, I just pulled the engine brace from the 12a and mounted onto the se front cover can I just measure 20mm back and drill a new hole?

Thanks, Ed

The geometry would be correct if you did that, assuming the mount is long enough. As you can see in the picture above, the new hole is very close to where the mount originally ended.

I just did this as well. The end of bracket will be the outer edge of you hole or slot. You should weld on some more material. I can get a picture if you need it.

So you got what you need? GSL-SE front cover engine brace.

I posted a pic if you scroll up and look you will see the original slot and the hole 20mm behind it The weld line is just behind the bolt hole. Do you need another camera angle? It is pretty simple just weld a piece of steel to each end and then drill. Note on the left side you need to grind down the corner. Other times I have also welded an additional reinforcement overlapping the weld line but that is not really necessary and the picture is more clear without it.

Hold on guys I'm confused. Drivefast so youre saying that the engine mount that RB sells is just an SE mount? And the SE mount will work w/out mofication. please clarify.

Thanks, Ed

Either pay $85 plus shipping to support a fine Rotary business, or make it yourself for (almost) free. Your $$ and your choice.

No the SE mount will not work without modification.

Get the racing beat one, its well worth it. I'm just not comfortable with the idea of modding teh stock one.

I'm sure the RB mount works fine; I use a lot of their other products. Out of curiosity what is it specifically you are not comfortable with modifying the stock mount?

I dont have a welder. Thats the only thing holding me back and none of the muffler shops here dont like to fabricate things.

Thanks, Ed

I guess that's why RB is able to sell the things then. LOL. Good luck. Eventually you may need something else fabricated so if you find a place or someone that can do it, keep on good terms with them. Muffler shops probably not a good spot, maybe a machine shop, metal working, trailer repair, or racing shop. People who work in that industry will also often do favors for you on the side for a couple six packs etc.

Dude, just use everything from the SE with no modifications. The engine, the Front cover, and the crossmember.

Directfreak are you sure? Damn I have been getting different answers from different people? Some say it will not work including RB. Some say it will.

Thanks, Ed

1) Use the SE engine
2) Keep the SE front cover on the SE engine
3) Use the SE engine crossmember engine bracket

=>

You don't have to do jack **** to fit an 84/85 SE engine into another FB as long as you use the stock SE parts.
