slight backfiring problem

If I shift fast and hard above 5500 my car backfires. It isnt severe but I was wondering if there is anything I can do.
If i let off the gas a second before I shift it doesn't backfire.
I should mention that the whole exhaust has rust on it and that there is a large hole somewhere in the middle.
(my friends call it the "hell bent chainsaw engine")

I have only had the car a 2 months. It has 90000 miles. would a ATF treatment help. I think I read that somewhere.

exhuast holes combined with raw gas introduced when letting off the gas equals BANG! Watch out, you'll hollow out your muffler faster..which is good, it will make it less restrictive. LOL! THis is clearly why my muffler is really really really loud. I don't care.

My old exhaust had the perfect amount of holes so that it sounded like I had a blow-off valve or something... you should try for that sound.

also try a new/used working ACV, if the backfiring bothers you. Or take the air pump off and get a ACV blockoff plate.

Holes in the exhaust cause backfires, along with other things, but I think that is definitely your problem. Until you fix the exhaust it will continue.
Contrary to a lot of opinions on this forum, RX7's do not naturally backfire.

I miss the backFIRES...they used to be huuuuuge, and consistent. Second gear decel would usually net me 4-6 small bright blue fire ***** ( they had a rythym too, I could predict them accuratly). Revving in up in neutral with "the technique" would get me those nice 2 footers. Removing my emissions junk and an ACV block off plate got rid of all that, as much as I miss it though the engine runs smoother. It used to scare me sometimes, feeling the flame front rumble my *** on the way past.... ahhh well here's to lighting up the night sky on some deserted back road late at night
