Ski Rack for Rear Window

Eh guys,

Driving down the road a month or so ago I saw a 1st gen with a ski rack that attached to the rear window. Anyone know what make it is?

It's also been suggested that a Yakima rack will attach to the rain gutters. I'd prefer it on the rear window just to keep from contacting any painted surface. Any thoughts?

buy a cheap ski car rack, cut off the actualy parts that attach to the skies, get a couple of nylon starps, and mount them on it. Oh and also get some rubber underneath ski holders to protect the glass in case of hard shock

I have Thule rack for bicycles that mounts to the rain gutters and supports the weight of two hybrid mountain bikes with no problems at all. I would feel comfortable mounting skis on them anyday.

I ended up spending about $300 or so on my Thule rack system, which includes locking fork runners for removable front wheels. This added a bit to the price, but I can leave the car and bikes unattended for short periods of time without having to worry about them being stolen. Ski racks should be simple and functional, and not give concerns about you losing your skis or having them whack against the car under bumps or aerodynamics. HTH,

Because the Thule rack uses gutter mounts for the RX-7, it does NOT sit on the painted roof. I have used Thule racks for over 15 years, and regularly carried up to 6-8 pairs of skis on them, and bicycles when there is no snow. They are the best and because they are so versatile they are much more economical than one might think. They can be used for bicycles, skis, or other gear simply by adding the appropriate attachment, and bars can be used alone to carry large items. They are also interchangeable with other vehicles. RX-7 feet fit other cars with rain gutters, and simply switching the adapter feet, or wider bars if necessary, allows you to use the same racks and attachments on any other vehicles you own or might own in future. All the racks, attachments, and boxes are lockable, and you can key your locks to match each other.

The glass mounted and other type racks are not nearly as secure for carrying, or against theft. In the ski industry I have seen/heard firsthand of numerous cheap racks flying off cars while driving. The cheap racks often do not lock at all, or are easily defeated in seconds. I wouldn't leave skis or bikes unattended in any rack for long, but they are safer in a Thule if you need to stop to eat, etc.

As for bicycles, carrying them in the back of an RX-7 is practically asking to scratch either the bicycle, the car, or both. The roof is a much better place but remember to take them off before driving into your garage. LOL.
