signs of a bad diff

i have some loose sounds coming from my gsl rear end one sounds like somethings loose and the other well it just dont sound tight any tricks to finding out for sure that it is bad. also will and 81 3rd member fit an 84 rear end and axles???

Jack it up. Take off the Wheels and then turn and listen till you find the noise.


The 81 rear will not work in the 84.

81 has small penion and small axles.
84 has large penion and Large Axles.

He 's talking about splines. the splines and yeah, i guess the axle diameters..

Do you mean IF you used a 81--> 3rd member along with the matching axles in a 84-85 housing ??,, could be, it would boil down to the bearing diameters and disk or drums.
