I heard they dont. They had a thread on that a week or two ago saying that someone tried and it didn't fit right.

FB and FC shifters are the same, including the turbos. The biggest difference is the S5's have a different thread pattern for the ****.

Because it seems the Miata shifter takes a little tweaking to fit properly, mostly on the plastic piece on the bottom ball. Everyone has different levels of skill. Those that have had problems with the Miata shifter may not be doing the tweaking needed, so it doesn't work for them.

Makes sense, sometimes I forget that people on here aren't allways the brightest. Reading yet another Header thread reminded me of that.

While at the junkyard, I noticed that the ball at the end is similar to the old school shifter (pre-81). But thats all. I didnt go any further with my research but I have a feeling that the entire shifter housing/shifter transplant would work. so what is required to make the miata shifter work on a FB tranny.

Karack did a write up on the Miata shifter how to for a sencond gen. There are some things that need to be done for it to work properly in the FC but it works fine I have one. I have looked at putting one in my old FB and it looked about the same but when I dropped my Miata(one I fitted for FC) it was harder to get in and out of gear, and not by needed extra leverage, or the fit was wrong. Just flet like it stuck a lil other than that it was fine.

I was the one who mentioned that using a Miata's short shifter for an FB would not work because the pivot screw in the collar was at the 10 o'clock position when you line up the three holes. And, the plastic bushing collar for the bottom ball was really snug for the transmission, even to barely get it in there, so I axed the idea of pushing it in further. When I saw the pivot screw was not in proper alignment, I chucked the shifter. I'll just save up for a true short shifter for an FB.

It's been quite a while since I have read the Miata thread and I have not looked at the vid. If the shifter can be made to work in an FC tranny, it will work in an FB one. I have a pile of shifters from both gens and if the surround and **** is not with them, I can't tell them apart.

Iirc, the shifter in question for the mod was an aftermarket short throw one designed for the Miata, not the stock one.

In regards to the one post about the shifter being stiffer to shift, check the waffle springs, there may be too many, making the top ring too tight on the pivot ball when it is bolted down.

As far as the screw being at 10 oclock, I'm not following that, as I have not seen the Miata shifter and do not know of this screw.

The plastic cover on the bottom ball is part of the mod, it needs to be thinned to fit the pocket in the shifter rod. If the reffered to screw is actually the alignment pin, it makes no difference what the orientation appears to be. Set the shifter in with the pin and slot lined up, then adjust the shifter **** to the correct position.

The pivot screw is the only thing I can describe it as. In a stock FB transmission, it is located at 12 o'clock, inside the collar area where the mounting holes are, and is permanently fixed into it. It's where the indent on the actual shifter sits to allow it to pivot. I also called it a pivot screw due to the fact that in the Miata shifter kit, it was an actual threaded screw. Hope this clears it up. If one was to look inside a shifter assembly, it should be highly easy to spot.

Didn't know the Miatas had a screw. The pin in the shifter housing is driven in from the outside and held in place by a friction fit. I have seen them work thier way out. The shifter still works, but it spins, making shifting iffy at best.

If I still had the car I would.
