Question Short in column? (Some smoke) then car shuts off

Driving it to work my Low Coolant light come on but very dim, then my RPM gage spiked about 200 and dropped then the car shut off but accessories stay on (radio). So I pull over and start it back up. Then about 5 mins later same thing happens but I notice a little smoke coming from my column shroud in the center. Pull off the shroud and didn’t see any wires that looked bad.

It’s a stock LS
Just replaced battery connectors
Radiator
Spark wires
Rotor & Cap
Coils

Not sure what it is but I’m searching (looking right now for pics of location of the fusible links in the column) any info you guys can provide would be great.

Hmm, fuel pump relay is in that general area and If that failed-----never mind, I see you have a '80 so that wouldn't apply.

Well, if you just replaced battery cables, I would recheck the connections. Maybe the smoke was from the starter area?

Turns out it’s the ignition switch, should have the new one by Wednesday.
