Secondary Ports Working?

I put some grease on the secondary port rods and it has not moved after a working the RPM guage so I am assuming that they are stuck. I was also told to look at them while moving the throttle for a more at hand method. I have been told that the cat converter may be bad and not giving proper back pressure to open them. I am not aware of any exhaust leaks upon inspection. How would you proceed? Am I probably looking at the Racing Beat cat? First I just wanted to be sure it is not isolated to just the ports.

James - hard to tell from your original post, but I assume that when you say 'secondary ports', you're talking about a 13B RE-EGI motor in an SE and you're also talking about the '6'-ports of the SE engine.

If this is the case, the '6'-ports will be fully open at about 3800 rpm, and can be seen to move with the car sitting still in the driveway when you rev it up. If you're not seeing these shafts turn when you get up to 3k rpm, then it's likely that the port sleeves are gummed up in their cylinders, which prevents the sleeves from turning, as witnessed by the '6'-port actuators not turning. The solution to this is to remove the Dynamic Chamber, upper intake manifold and lower intake manifold to remove the '6'-port sleeves (using carb cleaner and patience), and then lube them up with some light oil and replace the intake system.

The other cause could be as you described, a low exhaust gas backpressure that will not generate enough pressure to actuate the diaphragm valves that control the turning rods (and sleeves). This could be caused by an exhaust leak at the Air Control Valve (lower air intake manifold), or at the exhaust collector. -The '6'-ports operate at 2.4-3.8 psi, which is not a lot, and it would take a big hole in your exhaust system, or straight pipes behind your catalysts, to prevent this backpressure from forming under load.

If your cats are clogged, you'll find that they glow red at night and you have lost a lot of throttle response and acceleration. What you'd also find is that the '6'-ports would open at a lower rpm range, since MORE backpressure is being generated due to the clogged cats.

My money is on the '6'-ports being gummed up in their cylinders. A quick fix may be to grab a pair of pliers and slowly and carefully rotate the turning rods on the outside of the lower intake manifold - if they are 'scritchy' when you turn them, then they may not be turning freely under backpressure, i.e., they're not opening due to internal friction. This quick test allows you to find out if they're the culprit without having to take off the intake system. HTH,
