Yeah, thats weird. The best I got was 14 MPG, but that was taken from only 1/4 tank of gas. Normally I would do the math with a full tank, which gets me about 200 miles (with the old carb), and that would put me at about 13 MPG. Thats combined city and highway driving. But, since gas prices are so damn high, $20 doesnt fill her anymore, so I just put $10 in at a time, and that gets me about 1/4 of a tank .

I havent had a full tank to try a mileage trip with my new carb yet, so Im not really sure, I was just trying to get a rough idea . Besides, I think my gas gauge is wrong. I dont think it goes as high as it should, which to me means that even when its below the red in the empty, I still have more gas (I drive with it that low all the time, never even acts like its getting low). That could mess up my mileage numbers pretty bad too...

First measure your consumption accuraely for say two wrrks so there is an accurate reference point.

Then its basic tuning, what do the plugs look like, is the engine worn and needing a rebuild- check the compression, uses oil, air/fuel ratio ridht etc.

bliffle- any idea why the two cars have such a vastly different compression. It would be great to get the 83 up to the 85 performance.

Consumption on automatics is interesting. i checked with someone running over1,000 vehicles of different types. His experience is that the average automatic uses about 6-7%. But there are some exceptions, people often prefer a manual for their more sporty stye of driving, older more sedate drivers drive slow and prefer automatics.

What I have is no knowledge of whether RX-7 auto boxes can loose their efficiency, have poor change points.
