Smile Saving Gas With My Weber!

Well, I finally managed to control myself with the Weber (keep my foot out of it ), and pulled of an amazing 14 MPG with it the other night. Im expecting about the same with this fill up. It honestly almost like the more mods I do, the better gas mileage I get. With my stock 85 GSL, I was getting 9 MPG. Then, I went to the 83 with RB exhaust and got better mileage. Now, Im getting the best mileage ever with the exhaust and Weber. Maybe its just because they are more efficient? Oh well, Im not really complaining .

Anyway, here are two things I did that I think helped:

1. Stiffer throttle return spring. This helped with my problem of subconciously relaxing my foot on the highway and giving it progressivly more and more gas. I would then I let off to slow down, and do it all over again. Besides, I wanted a better spring, and this one just feels better .

2. Re-Installed the cruise control. Im sure this helped too, as I dont even have to have my foot on the gas now . This was actually really simple to do. I just used an extra opening in my throttle cable bracket I made, put the cable in with the main throttle cable on the carb linkage, used a spare port on the manifold for the vacuum signal, and everything else is the same as stock.

Heres a quick run down on the throttle cable bracket.

Originally when I made it, I planned on using the top hole that the cruise control now uses. When I tried it however, it was clear that the hole wasnt low enough to fully open the throttle on the carb. So, I just put the throttle cable lower in one of the other holes. I had planned on cutting the top off to make it look better, but now Im glad I didnt . I got to thinking that the cruise control is never even gonna have the throttle more than 1/2 of the way open anyway (probably not even 1/4), so the top hole would be perfect for the cable because the fact that you cant get WOT from there wouldnt matter. So, I put it in, and then realized I needed a source for the vacuum signal. Well, luckily there was a 1/8" NPT port in the manifold that I had just plugged because it wasnt used by anything, and I just happened to have a 1/8" NPT to 1/8" barbed hose adapter fitting laying around from a previous OMP injection idea. So, I popped that fitting in there, ran the hose to it, plugged it all in, hooked it up, and took it for a spin, and it worked just fine.

The only things I want to do to the setup are:

1. Figure out a way to shorten the cable. You can see in the pictures that its too long and it has to "loop around" the throttle cable linkage.

2. Get two nuts for the cable to be held in place with like the throttle cable. As you can see, I needed a way to keep the cable aligned with the hole, so I used a zip tie to hold it parallel with the throttle cable. Without this zip tie, it would go in at an angle, and cause the idle to come up. The other zip tie is on the cable itself. This one was needed to keep the cable from coming out of the bracket when the throttle was moved with the pedal and not with the cruise control servo.

3. Repaint all the pieces. Im in the process of cleaning and detailing my engine bay (its a long process, give me a break), so I want everything in there to be the best looking it can .

Anyway, I know this is rambling on, so Im just gonna shut it down here.

A Weber is a carburetor. Look at the picture in the bottom right of my signature, or look at the pictures at the link I posted above.

2 copper OMP lines
1 brake booster
1 cruise control line (just added)

As for the picture, yeah, I can try and get you one if I remember. All I did was use crush fittings for the copper tube on the manifold end, and then used two little sections of 1/8" rubber fuel line on the OMP end. One end of the small piece slides onto the OMP, and the other end slides over the copper tube. Just like the stock setup with the rubber tube at the end of the plastic lines, only with metal OMP lines instead of plastic ones.

timmya2- like you I would like to know what a Webber is. Could be a cheap Chinese copy of a well known carb. i notice that the new california made Weber IDA48 is nearly US$1000.

RotorMotorDriver- your consumption figures are alarming. the original figures were 16mpg city and 23mpg highway. On average you should acheive about 20mpg. On long trips I normall get 28mpg cruising at 70mph. Your original set-up must have been seriously off-tune

are you sure about that? my stock automatic 85 is tuned and it gets horrible mileage! 8-10 mpg!

I thought I was the only one getting less than perfect mileage.

Maybe it's my lead foot and large turbo

i get about 130 miles to the tank, which is right around 10mpg... and it sucks.... i was hoping for at least 15 or so

allthough, i doubt my **** is tuned right, and i think my tank may be leaking.

question: since i'm using a dellorto (no fuel return line) should i cap the line on the firewall, or leave it open to vent?

Sorry to burst your bubble but my stock 85 GSL auto gets 20mpg solid (city milage). It has 110psi compression, burns a little oil and still gets decent milage. My old GS 5 spd used to get 22 city and 27 hiway mpg. You all have a heavy right foot I suspect.

that might explain the VERY strong gas smell that the car emits on a more than half full tank... hmmm.

good call Robert

On long freeway trips I also got 28mpg with my dellorto, 39mm chokes, 12a streetport.

Somethings really wrong if you get under 10mpg.

well, i went and plugged up that return line with a bolt and a hose clamp... we'll see about mileage and smell in a few days i suppose.

i knew something had to be wrong... cause it's not running THAT rich, it's a little rich, but to consume fuel at the same rate as my rich running Chevelle with a motor exactly 6 times the size is ridiculous... that thing got 10mpg around town... ****

I used to get great gas milage on my old 12 like 30 mpg.

all I had was a streetport exhaust sytem, edelbrock filter and a electric fan.

But it was running lean as ****.

680rwhp12A- I am certain I get 28mpg.

One of my regular trips is about 750 miles one way.
I fill up with standard fuel drive 150 miles freeway at 75mph+ then 200 miles of 2 lane rural at 65-70, followed by 100 miles of rural highway at 75mph. The road is relatively flat and I only have to slow down for one town.

I then stop to refuel at 452 miles, driven nonstop with great West Indian music

The measured consumption is 27.95mpg with the 16.6 gal tank. I visit 3 rural hospitals where I have to drive the 450 miles as start of my various trips. The tax authorities make me keep very accurate figures!

The car is a 1985 12a, stock ported, modified Nikki with K&N filter, a RB style header and exhaust, 14" Dunlop w10 tires, deleted airpump and AC. The rwhp is 121-126 when dynoed. Its an Australian specification engine with the larger stock ports giving an extra 15hp to the USspec!

What gives poor consumption

an automatic car
driving in traffic
short trips
heavy right foot to get performance
crawling round the Rocks

Check your consumption by filling up the tank, zero the distance, drive till the tank is nearly empty, fill up again and check the distance travelled. Work out how many litres you used per 100km. That is the Australian fuel consumption practice used by NRMA. When doing the test carry a can of spare fuel in case you run out as guages are usually inaccurate.

Around Sydney with an automatic I would say 15 l per 100 km should make you happy, 18 would be realisic and 25 a horror requiring major tuning. But what you said sounds more like the consumption of a heavy loaded semi-trailer!

Your tank capacity is around 55 litresfor a s1-2, 65 for a s3.

I get 20-22 on the 83GS and 12-14 on the 85GSL. Both idle well and run good, except the 85 still has a stumble at 4000. I have a new Bonerz cat and muffler to go on the 85. I plan to put headers on both cars when I get done working on the two houses I have to fixup.

Woah dude. Mine got great gas mileage with auto. Especially in stop-go traffic for some reason.
