Frankenrex, I like your mods, and your work. Good job.
I like the site too.

How do I get the modifications page to see how
you built the speaker pods?

The DXF files for my radio bezel are at
http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/files/RAD_BZL.dxf
and
http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/files/RAD_BZL2.dxf

The first one uses the stock headlight up.radio ant/defrost switches, the second one uses the narrower 81-83 switches (I liked them better - more streamlined.) Everything else is the same.

I know that this is an old thread, but it is mine so it is ok. I think I might finally have the time and motivation to do this, but I still have a few questions.
#1: What do I use to hold the stereo in place. Do I need some sort of bracket etc. link to place to get it. Pics. Anything would help.
#2: Yes I have searched a lot for the wiring, but I haven't figured it out yet. What is the best way to wire these things. Again pics, links, etc. would be great.
Thanks in advance for all of your help.
P.S. Please post any pictures of your install. Anything that you think will help me gain more knowledge on this would be great. Thanks again.

jutny, how is the head unit supported? Is there a reason why you opted to put it closer to the climate controls than the tray. It seems like if it was a little lower then it would interfere less with the climate control mounting. More information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

1: All DIN stereos come with a sleeve or "can". The sleeve has a flange that keeps it from falling through a properly sized hole, and "fingers" that can be bent out behind the panel to wedge the sleve into place. The head unit then slides into the sleve, and locks into it via clips on the head that snap into recesses on the sleeve. I also have a piece of stiff back-bracket (comes with most head units) bolted to the rear of the head that reaches down to a cross bar inside the radio cavity to support the rear of the radio.
2: The only factory wires that I reused were the +12V ignition switched and, well, that was pretty much it. Ran my own ground to one of the bolts in the cavity, had to run a +12V constant for memory, and ran all my own speaker wires, of course.

its not supported and it dosent move around at all. I wanted it to be centered for looks, and my climate controls arent mounted (i cut off the tabs in the way)... but they do work i'll fix that someday.

Anyone else have pics of their SA install. Particularly behind the panel so I can see more. Thanks.

Also, it looks like it would fit fine in the original expansion slot. Is there any reason besides looks that people opted not to put it there. Thanks.

Because the lower opening would still require trimming, and than you'd have the shafted radio opening up above with nothing in it. What do you plan to do with that hole? There's already a pocket available for the lower hole.

I meant behind the panel. I know that I would have to trim the plastic panel, I just don't want to trim the metal. As for the original spot I would just leave the original unit in as a spaceholder. I know it might not look good, but I'm into the practicality, and the ability to return the car to stock rather than just the looks. I just wanted to know if there was anything besides trimming of the plastic panel required for putting the stereo in the lower spot. Thanks for your help though.

Ah.
Well, on mine (the aluminum full-custom job), I originally just cut the metal behind the panel in such a way that I could just bend it back out of the way. Just a horizontal cut just below the AC controls, and then bend back. I think I've since cut it all out, since I don't believe I'll ever go back to stock, though if I do need to, I can make a plate for the shafted radio that can be bolted or riveted in. What's behind the plastic is immaterial, appearance-wise. If you're going to be cutting up the plastic bits anyway, I'll go whole hog, and make it the way I want.
My first instal did have the radio down low, and I filled in the shafted radio hole completely, and stuck a "Mazda" emblem there. That setup used what started as the original plastic. Picture here: http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/imag...onsole-tb.html
That one I just trimmed the metal behind a little.
You'll note that I also added power mirrors with the control where the change tray used to be in the shifter surround.

I was messing with my interior yesterday, and finally remembered about the pictures. I took them with my phone, so its not the greatest quality.

In the first pic you can see where i cut out around the heater controls and screwed the sheet metal back together.

second pic. plastic cutout. and the last pic is the little support for the back i made out of some aluminum bar. i just bent it and rivited it to the cdplayer jacket, and bolted it to the frame at the bottom.

For the top i rivited the old tab that held up the stock radio to the jacket. so it just slides it. This is obviously NOT the most secure install. but its fuctional. i hope that helps.

My plan is to have only the screen itself, and on the inside of the panel

Don't cut!

I have a 79 Rx and what I did was take the center console off and took out the space holder for the stock tape player (which I didnt' have). You're left with an opening just small enough that a standard stero won't fit.

I then hooked up a newer stereo, placed it on the metal shelf and put the face plate back on. You can't get it out through the hole so it will never get stolen and the opening is big enough to reach all the buttons and fit a CD through. It isn't flush forward of the hole, but back a half an inch or so.

I don't have any pics, but it looks fine and I haven't done any damage.
