s4 vs s5
what is the difference between s4 and s5, what is better, and for that matter why are those different from s2, s3, s6? Am i correct in thinking that they are all different engines?

Terrified.
S1's - S3's are first gens. S4's and S5's are second gens. If you find an S3, you have two engine options a 12a (like in all first gens) or a 13b (only found in the GSL-SE models, unless previous owner transplanted it there.) Everything from 1986 on up had a 13b. Which is better? Its all subjective, like diabolical1 said. My personal favorites are 1983 GSL's, but that is just because I like limited slips and disc brakes.
If you are talking about S4's and S5's, then head over to the second gen section of the site, all I know about them is that S5's produce more power when comparing N/A to N/A, and Turbo to Turbo.

S4-S5 and all the other series of RX-7s for that matter, reffer to changes made to the car as a whole.
Such as, the 3 styles of 1st gen...79-80...81-83...84-85
And the 2 styles of 2nd gen...86-88....89-92
And of course S6 represents the FD....93-95.
However, most of those changes DO include engine changes, some of them very significant.Thats why many people will reffer to specific engines by the series of car that it came out of.
Specifically,in regards to the S4 TII vs S5 TIIdebate.....the S5 is tech. superior when bone stock. It has more power, faster controls,a smoother EFI system and some stronger internals that carried over to the S6.The S4 is a little more......"wooden" with its EFI and turbo system. The ECU gets less info from the engine and there is no check engine light/MIL system. While it uses the same size turbo, the S4 turbo is more prone to cracking and over boosting due to its small wastegate and twin scroll flapper.
The non turbo S4 and S5 engines are basically the same story.More power and refinement with the S5 engine, although the S4 is still a slight tech. upgrade over previous 13B's(84-85 GSL-SE)
With regards to a 1st gen engine swap, most people tend to go S4 because they are cheaper and easier to mount up and wire. The S5 is a sweet engine, but it has its gremlins too...
