RX7Girl needs help with tires

Hey guys,

I'm looking into getting some new tires for my 84GS. The problem is, I really don't know a thing about tires and what I should get for her. I don't even know what's on her now, but I don't think they're anything great. I'm wanting something that will add a nice look to my car, maybe improve the driving ability..and whatever else tires are supposed to do. I'm pretty good with my car, but am totally oblivious in the tire world. I have her stock rims and plan on keeping them. Any ideas on size? Brand? Anything? Any advice would be appreciated greatly. Thanks. And yes, I did a search...I just got more confused.

Thanks in advance!!!

Tammie

You're best bet is to go to www.tirerack.com or www.discounttiredirect.com and see what they're "What Fits My Car?" link gives you. They'll list what sizes will fit for it depending on the rim size (altho one website will show like two while the other will show one) and then all tires in that size. I'd just shoot for nice summer performance tire. They shouldn't cost too much and will give you the traction that you'd probably like.

Since your in Cali where theres no snow you dont need an M+S (mud and snow) tire. A summer tire will be better as theres less compromise in the design for those other conditions. I have the Sumitomo HTR's on my car and they have excellent grip, wet and dry.

since you have the stock wheels on it, your only real option is the sumitomos, most tires don't come in 13s anymore (short of full race tires). If you have the money, i'd suggest upgrading to a set of 15s (either kosei from tirerack or find a set of used 15s on the board) and then your tire options are almost limitless, falken azenis, hankook z212s, yoko es100s...

As for size, I suggest 195- 60, and agree that a set of Sumitomo HTR 200 tires is a good choice.

If they are the stock 13inch rim

205/50 R13

They look REAL nice and they have lots of traction. Little hard to find a complete set. They fit perfect, give a real agressive look AND they dont rub the wheel well.

Edit: I dont remember accually if its 50 series or 55 series.

You want a 205/60R13, not 205/50R13. I have 205/60R13's on the rear of my 7 and they look great. Mine are BF Goodrich Radial T/A's, but they aren't available in that size anymore. I would suggest the Sumitomo HTR 200's. No personal experience, but the price alone is enough to convince me to get them. Can't go wrong for $40 a tire.

Although they aren't listed on their website, Discount tire direct can order Falken ZE-512 tires in 185/60/13 size. I went to my local America's Tire Co. (affiliated with Discount Tire Direct) and asked if they would match the price (with shipping) that I got from Vulcan tire ($184 for a full set) and they were happy to do it. I've heard a few complaints about the Sumitomo HTH 200 tires having rather soft sidewalls. Mounting a 205 width tire on a 5.5" rim is not ideal.

Grassroots Motorsports did a write up on the Summitomo a couple of months ago and highly recommended them for 13" rims on older sports cars, and the price is great.

A wise man I work with says "if it has **** or tires you're going to have trouble with it and it's going to cost you money". Just an observation...

You have to run them with more pressure then most tires. I have some HTR 50's and keep them at 42

A 192/60/13 would be good, and tire rach has the HTR 200 in that. Sumitomo also has the saxion line, We have them on my wifes LE and they are real nice.

I've got a set of Pirelli P7s in 175/50/13 that are awesome. They were my friend's rain tires for his GT3 RX3 and he only used them once. The 175 is a little bit misleading though, because they're actually wider than a 205 for some reason.

Those must look rediculous on a 7. A 175/50 would have a 4" smaller diameter and throw off the speedo a LOT, nearly 10mph at 60. The sidewall would be about 3.25" high instead of 5". A shorter sidewall normally has a wider tread because the tread has to be closer in size to the section width.

Can someone post a pic of the stock wheels with 205's? My '81 has Rikens that have 205's but my '85 has the stock wheels and I was wondering what that would look like. I think it has 185's on it now.
