Trickle charging is when you charge a battery slowly, which is what you were doing. Now the next question is, Is the car even turn from the starter? was the clicking coming on when you tried to turn the car over? If so then, either you have a bad connection from the battery to the starter, or you could have a bad starter.
I'm not sure about the alternator stopping a car from starting, IMHO I think not, the car may just run on battery until it's out, I could however be wrong in this.

When I turn the key is clicks I think its the starter that does it. When I first threw the charger on it would rapidly click, now that's its been on for awhile it makes one constant click.

Hmmmmmm.... might be a bad starter or the connection is bad and you may be clicking at the starter but your not getting enough power to it, you did say you could turn the engine manually correct?

It very well could be the grounds, you really need to clean those before doing anything else, because if I recall correctly grounds lead to the negative terminal. So my suggestion is to get those cleaned up and see what happens.

i read on another thread that the click is just the starter trying to move and that i should hit it. when i hit thew starter it started sounding like it was moving but really weak. Is that because my battery cables are corroded or i have a bad starter?

I would say so do the easy first, change/fix your wires going from the battery to the starter, and check all your grounds and ground wires. Be sure you have a charged battery.

Take the battery back. Have them check it, after a month, my first battery blew up inside. Then clean the battery connections. The clicking only means the battery does not have enough juice to turn the starter. Are you sure you trickle charged the correct terminals ++ to -- ? Or crossed the + and - by placing the battery in backwards?

That's correct. There should be a (-) ground toward the bottom of the suspension inner fender. Get the battery checked if you can, it will at least eliminate that as a problem.
