Rust

Hi I have a 1981 1st gen and it has some rust. It has a little rust along the edge of the wheel arch. It also is rusted badley on the ledge on the fire wall. What should I do. The car is in really good nic other wise. It has new suspension, rebuilt alternator and a new cooling system. The car is nice. I was thinking of getting the rust repaired profesionally, or maybe selling the car. What should I do? Is getting the rust repaired profesionally really expensive ?

depends if the rust is on a structural element or not.

Any body shop can chop out the rust and weld folded or bent metal in its place to look reasonably stock when repainted - it's the repainting that costs bucks.

I had bad luck finding a body shop willing to touch rust, since they have to warranty their work and you can never eliminate rust 100%.

the body shop should chop out all the rust and a margin of clean metal around it, then weld in the new stuff

Has anyone actually had a profesional rust job done? Was it very expensive? I would rather have a shop do it because they will do it properly. I brought the best car I could afford rust wise but it is still there. I guess that is the price you pay for having a 20 year old car.

I've had panels replaced after a deer collision. Got the shop to fudge the insurance claim and chop out rusty panels as well, then paint the whole car, for just a few hundred bucks (outta my pocket) more. I'm about to have similar cancer treatment done to my ReX

get another FB without rust and swap stuff over. FB's are so common, and so easy to work on it'll take you a few hours..

I have thought about that but I don't really have the time or experience to swap everything (the suspension and brakes look like thed be tought to swap). I asked the local rotary specialists and they said it wasn't worth having them do it 'cos it would cost a fortune.

'snot that hard, and they have to take most of that stuff off to repair the body if it's had the bun... get a manual and you'll see how most of the stuff comes apart
