Running Like Crap! Please Help

I just got a 1981 rx7 gs. It has sat for a year, and was run into a creek on the driver's side. I just started restoring it. The car fired for me with a fresh battery. A little MMO in the engine oil and the fuel, a new dizzy cap and rotor, and still it runs like crap (difficult to start, RPMS creeping up with pedal buried in floor, and really terrible oil burning, and stalling). I know that the oil burning is normal, as this is my 5th 7 in about 3 years. My main goal is to get this one running well, then start the rest of the restoration. I ordered a carb rebuild kit, but am not sure if that will solve the problem. Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

On A side note, the transmission is not "responding". The clutch was frozen to the pressure plate when i got it. I freed it in the normal put it in gear, and run the starter while jumping forward until it frees. Now, it will go into gear with it running, but with the clutch out, it doesn't move, or bog down. The car will move if i put it into gear, and tap the starter. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

poor running

If you have not you need to start by draining the fuel tank and see what kind of crap comes out. You need to get some fuel filters for spares, change the one you have on there. Blow out all the lines to expel the old fuel. after that start looking for broken vacuum lines or disconnected ones. But it sounds like a fuel problem as
long as you have checked to make sure both ignitors are working and their is decent compression in each hole. rx7doctor

ps

The reason I want this running so well is that I want to keep the 12a, build it up, and get some more ponies out of it. As not to incur the rath of numerous rotary fanatics, such as myself, i have resisted the temptation to put in a freshly rebuilt chevy 350 that i rebuilt, pushing out about 400hp and 350ft lb torque. oh well, it'll go into something else

sounds like a clutch master/slave issue or both for the not responding issue

Quick check you can perform before you look into the carb. Throw a timing light on it to verify that both lead/trail ignition is working properly. Losing your leading can mimic some carb issues. Good luck.

The clutch problem is most probably NOT the master/slave cyls, though they're probably dead too.

If you can get your shifter into gear with the car running and it does nothing different than when it's in neutral, then the problem is with your clutch disc and pressure plate. I found this out last year when my clutch decided to go. The car started, and with my new master and slave cyls I could put the car into 1st.... but it would just sit there in the middle of the street purring happily, not moving at all, in 1st gear!

For poor running, make sure you've drained out all the old gas and replaced with fresh stuff. Replace the fuel filter. Go ahead and rebuild the carb, it's a good idea. Check for vacuum leaks everywhere. Check ignition (get a metal brush and clean your plugs, check for spark).

You should replace all your fluids and do a basic tune-up for sure. When rotaries have been sitting, they take some gentle coaxing into working again. I made a post in a thread for a car that had been sitting MUCH longer, but the same basic procedures apply:

And one thing that I just recently discovered that should also be changed: The battery cables! Come spring I'll probably do a write-up for us 12a guys, but it's pretty easy. Negative goes from battery to strut tower to engine ground. Positive goes from battery to starter, with a T-off to the fusible link box. AMAZING difference in cranking power and spark with just the simple replacement of these cables and their connectors. Remove yours, go to the store, get similar gauge wire and similar connectors and go nuts

One thing to add

The clutch must be in for it to shift into gear with car running, so is that clutch or what?
