Runnin' Rough

My bone stock 79 SA has been having some problems as of late. I'm pretty sure that it's the exhaust cloggin' up/getting a lot of build-up, and then when i drop a gear and give it a hard pull it smoothes out. But, what's been happening is it almost like stumbles, but not an actual miss, power is down, but still...not like a misfire. After i drop a gear, WOT, 3rd or 4th gear for 5-10 seconds, it'll pick-up, take off, and then when i shift/let off, i usually get one or numerous shotgun-like backfires, or if i am in a pissy mood and decide to leave it on the floor through 4th and 5th gears after it starts to pick-up, it'll kind of hesitate, and blow tons of oil smoke for 3-5 seconds worth, and it's a good thick cloud of it. So, i'm looking for some advice from the more rotary inclined. Again, this is with all factory emissions equiptment in place. Rats nest, smog-pump, TR, everything.

After driving it a bit more, it seems to be an Oil metering problem. All of the sudden i'm going through tons of oil, and my oil left on the ground is minimal, amount burned is more and more, the more i add. The oil was low enough that it wasn't even registerring on the dipstick when i had stopped to check it when it started running great right before this, i added a quart of oil, and it ran like crap again. So...anyone else experience this? I need to look in my manual and check out some more on the oil metering pump, and i need to test it when i get back to town.

What is with people asking advice and then not listening to it lately? The smoke screen on deceleration is a dead giveaway for worn oil control rings. Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer can sometimes help with this, allowing you to postpone a rebuild. I was blowing more smoke than James Bond, and the Lucas has kept her going with no issues for nearly a year now. The only time it smokes now is during races when I let off hard at about 8500 rpms. My engine has 208,000 miles on it now...
