Rotor & Main Bearing Installation Tool - Necessary?

Just as the title says. I searching around a little, but couldnt find any real threads on rotor bearing installation surprisingly (for the engines anyway, I found lots of brake rotor bearings). Basically, I know I dont HAVE to have the tool, but I want to hear from people who have possibly done the job with and without the tool. I know that there are some tools that make things really stupid easy that are worth their cost, and some that arent. Some tools can also easily be made from commonly available things as well, so does anyone have any input on that? How about a normal bearing press set?

Well i just did this job not too long ago..... Put the bearings in the freezer until your ready to do the job...You want them as cold as possible so that they will shrink. Now you want the opposite for the rotor, Heat it up (i used a heat gun), this should make it expand. Makes the whole process a bit easier.

As far as tools, I know for one of the bearings (Cant remeber if it was the rotor, or the main bearings) i used the front pulley piece (with the actual pulley removed, i believe it was the rotor bearing) and a impact socket for the other size bearing. i hammered them in and turned out perfect.

Im sure you already know this, but be super careful that they are entering straight!!

Hope this makes sense!

I planned to use a press, I planned to draw lines and such on them for the alignment tabs, and of course you want them straight, got it. I was mainly wondering if its "just like any other bearing race" you have to press in where you can find just about anything the right size and use it to press in. How is getting them out? Very difficult? I used to work at a machine shop, so they might be able to machine down a piece of scrap metal to the right size on the lathe I could use. That would be snazzy.

I did the lines aswell, just forgot to mention it... But yes, its just like any other bearing race.... Just a little more fragile since its a soft material.
As far as getting them out, i put the entire rotor in the freezer again, and then found somthing the right size and hit it out... Not difficult at all. With the help of a machine shop, you wont have any problems!
