Yea it called timing, all engine regardless has to have the engine distributor calibrated to match rotor/piston location.

The book shows you how this is done, unless you want me to get up and type it end for you.

'off the top of my head the engine timing marks need to line up with pointer/pulley mark and then there is a mark on the distributor gear that line up with a mark on the distributor housing. Then you drop in the distributor, tighten nut, check timing with timing light.'

I am also having a problem with this, and am in the process of trying to get the car runnning.
Do use the first notch or the second notch going clockwise? Or am I totally wrong?

Line it up with the leading mark which is the 1st notch. Then just line up the tally marks on the dizzy and drop it in.

So the painted mark means nothing at all, mine is worn off so I am going to use the notch. Glad the notch is what is used.
