rotating by crossing tires

i just wanted to know if switching the front tires (front left to front right and front right to front left) would do any harm. i want to do this because the outside is wearing out so i wanted to flip them to wear it back to even for longer tire life. but i wanted to see if it was ok to do this before i do it. i heard that the new steel belts are better than before so it might be ok to do this? any reply would be great! thanks in advance!

I dont see why it would hurt. May want to get an alignment sometime in the future though.

how would that stop your wearing out problems?

wouldnt it just keep on wearing out on the outside of the tyre? or is one tyre wearing out faster?

You would have to remove the tire from the rim and switch it that way, otherwise you will still wear on the outside if you just move the tires to opposite sides. Why not rotate the front to the back and crisscross the rear tires. Right rear to left front, left rear to right front. That is generally the way to rotate your tires anyway. I would strongly suggest an alignment otherwise it will keep wearing your tires on the outside. Hmmmmm... $45.00 alignment..........$150.00 new tires.

haha sorry guys i didnt realize that the rims cant work that way. thanks for the replies though! really appreciate it. usually now (at costco) they rotate by switching back to front or vice versa but the left and rights dont criss cross. because they say its the steel belt that has been rolling in one direction and if it is crossed the belt will roll in the other direction and loosen it up and might cause damage. but i guess im goin to just do the full rotate myself because the outside is wearing out faster than the inside. thanks again and have a great day!

rotation

selweg got it right. Wally Mart is out to lunch on this. Only if the tires are directional would you want to rotate front to rear but keeping the tires on the same side.

Tire lore is that radials take a directional set, so you don't cross over. Usually, especially in the CA freeway system, the left-front tire wears somewhat faster due to frequent left curves on freeway off ramps. So front to rear rotations help a bit. But good tires are so cheap these days that it's worthwhile changing them. Get tires delivered cheap from tirerack.com : I use Pirelli P400s which wear quickly but stick good on wet roads.
