Rotary Noob ,Might get 12a!

Ok real quick and down to the point.
Im looking to trade my 1996 ford probe for a 1984 RX-7,12a,5spd that supposifly has 5k on the rebuilt/replaced motor(go figure the guy doesnt know). It has front end damge that i would just replace with some junkyard pieces(hood, bumper, and hood valent thingy). And according to him just the draw bearing in the tranny is going fast and hard.We drove it today(i didnt, cuz im not good with standard yet) and it ran fine once in gear but clicked when shifting). He lives only about a .10 of a mile of me so if it give me problm i give him a piece of my mind.

1)I belive this guy, and willing to have all those htings fixed (just worried about tranny and motor 1st of course). BUt i no nothing about rotaries and the guy who is gogin to do the trann for me doesnt know if they bolt up diiferntly from a cyl based engine or what? Is this going to be a bigger challenge of a job since its rotary or is it the same(Still challenfgning) as a cycl based tranny job.

2) like i said i belive the guy about the motor, but when i asked him if it was rebuilt or replaced and he said he don't know, he said he just paid 4k for the engine or car or something and it was done, he htinks its replaced.BUt hes not sure. Is there anything i can look for to see if it is a factory motor or something. As well as what to look for on a 12a motor as far as smell, visible or by ear are all concerned.

thnx i really liek this car 1st gen are the best lookers!!!BUt im not trying to get took cuz my car is in good 1996 condtion with no mechanical problems.

First of all welcome to the forums! 2nd rotary engines are actually easier than piston based engines. They are very good cars. Can you post any pics of this car?

Do you have another vehicle? I would not trade your Probe for the RX-7.

Why would u trade a good running car with no problems for a car that has damage and cant verify the quality of the engine? If you really must have it....take out a loan

His Rx-7 Runs good, but it needs a new throw out bearin gin the transmission, which is 80.00,or i could get the 150.00 clutch kit from NAPA(which i would do).It has 5k on the engine 12A. Its faster than my probe, easier to work on then my probe. And is something to work with at my age,17...It does have front end damage such as the bumper bending up and the hood a lil worn by being hit in a parking lot(unless he lieing and these cars are freakn strong and can take a pretty good hit) anyways. After the tranny is fixed there wouldnt be much from there...It all relies on if that engine is really at 5k, but im working on it.

ps. I can sell my car around here for only like 2500, he's asking 2000k for it, so it would be 500 profitable plus i dont have time to do all that.

pss. plz answer the questions form the first post.

Why wouldnt he have paperwork on the engine job? I dont know if I would trust this guy and $2000 is too much for the car. As far as the work on the trans. it is really no different than a piston car. It is quite a bit of work however cause you have to take alot of the exhaust system down and the heat shields.
