Question Rotar Housing

Hey guys, i discovered today that my front rotar is gone thanks to the Apex seals, one of them is totally cracked in half, but to the point, if a rotar housing is damaged what steps can you take to help smooth it out and take gouges and scrathes out,
My friend has a 12a rotary motor which he is gonna put into a Lotus kit car that he was going to rebuild and replace all the internals anyway and port etc. i figured that i could just give him my motor plus some money, anyway he is scared if we swap just the blocks that the rotar housing from my motor will be fucked, what could i tell him to help insure him or we could do to make the rotar housing pretty again if it is damaged

Sorry to hear about that. Typically there is no way to refinish the rotor housings. Your rotor may also be destroyed. The same thing happened on the 1980 rx-7 I had. The rear rotor tossed an apex seal and destroyed the rear rotor and housing. I have an extra 12a front rotor if you end up needing it. I would be willing to sell it cheap. I also have an extra housing, but it is not in real good shape. New housings are about $350 a piece. It really depends on what you want. If you go the rebuild route, I would recommend new housings or at least used ones in good shape if you want the engine to last. You could also try to find a used engine from a wrecking yard or someone on this forum. Good luck.

If the rotor housings are really bad they may not be able to be reused. If you machien them to get rid of the gouges then they will be out of spec. not to mention the coating will be gone. You are better off buying new ones of finding another engine that has ones that are in good shape. Sorry about that.

Is there any chance that the rotar or housing isnt messed up, or do they usually get scared up when the apex seals blow

I lost only one apex seal on my 85. It punctured the rotor, gouged the housing, and generally made me unhappy.

Still getting a solid engine to replace it too.

Sorry, but the prognosis isn't good.

If you can still see two halves of the apex seal in place, then it's doubtfull that the rotor or housing are damaged. Just having the seal crack isn't going to gouge and scrape anything unless it's slipping out during rotation due to the centrifugal force. If you can still see that all the pieces are there and you can account for every bit of the seal, I'd think the rotor and housing should be fine.

Just my 2 cents,

Well, if you got extraordinarily lucky, maybe the missing piece shot out an exhaust port?

Sorry 'bout the engine man...
