Ringing your RPM Buzzer

In a recent RX-8 review I read, the writer commented on the joy that RX-7 owners have known for setting off that warning buzzer. The comments set off a few questions in my mind.

First, I'm wondering how often the average 1st Gen person here sets off the buzzer on their car.

Second, I've heard a wide range about ringing the warning buzzer -- verything from it does no damage to it scorches the rotors every time that you run over 7000 RPM. What is truth and what is fiction?

Finally, what is the true redline max: 7000 or 8000? I've seen both listed at various sources.

Thanks!

I hit the buzzer almost daily The stock engine stops making good power after 7k, so unless the car is modified, then there isn't much point in taking it past 7k. If your car is modified and still making power past 7k, then it's fine to take the engine up to 8400, but not any farther, at 8500 the apex seals start to chatter bad enough to chew up the rotor housing.

According to Racing Beat, the 12a rotary will experience vibrating resonances that happen at above 8,400 RPM, which can cause the stationary gear to move out of place, thereby forcing a rotor towards the side housing.

If you keep the OMP (oil metering pump) set according to spec., then you should have no problem with short bursts of 7-8K RPM.

Running an engine all day at 7-8K RPM is (IMO) a whole other matter.

I've rewired a remote potentiometer into my tach buzzer circuitry so that I can set at which RPMs I want the buzzer to go off.
-The novelty of having done that wore off quite quickly, and I now have the buzzer set at way past 8000 RPMs whereby it never goes off.

I only see it when i miss a gear (once every blue moon) or when i am setting a smoke show. I actually like it... even though a lot of people find it annoying, i actually find it helpful so i know when to ease the **** off.

I'm pretty sure the powerband on a 12a extends to 7200 rpm.

I've been wrong before, however so....

YMMV, SPSFD.

If you do a search about the subject, there are several old threads and one thing they all have in common is that NO TWO buzzers are alike!
Some go off early, some late. And they are all driven by folks with different styles, too!
I imagine it's probably set at 6800-7200.
The buzzer circuitry is inside the gauge cluster. The previous owner (as you describe him) probably has never been back there.

Isn't it set at the begining of the REDLINE on your Tacho - IE; 7000rpm.
Secondly - I take it then it is only a buzzer and not an actual limiter? Being that I have only had my 7 2 months and have heard it twice, I assumed you couldnt rev past that. . .
Also -
Engine Type: Twin Rotor 12A
Displacement: 1146cc/70ci
Compression Ratio: 9.4:1
Output(hp): 100bhp @ 6000 rpm
Torque: 105lb-ft @ 4000 rpm
Fuel Supply: Downdraft, Two stage, 4 barrel carburetor

Doesnt that mean that a 100 Horse Power Car makes ALL its power at 6000 rpm? On a STOCK engine, how would reving it to 8000 or more actually do "anything" ??
Just curious. . .

Typically they take a sample based on where the two bell curves of torque and HP show their best faces. You still get power above 6K. The powerband (as I understand it) starts around 5000 rpm and peaks at 7200 rpm. By accelerating higher (and closer to redline) before shifting, you are keeping your engine in that powerband when you shift gears. It'll go straight from top end of the powerband to low end - but importantly, it is still in the powerband and therefore making more power than it would if you shifted earlier and had to accelerate into the powerband.

I think it is interesting the RB says 8.4K rpms.....

Keep in mind that redline is not only for the engine but for everything attached to it and driven off the engine. Alternators, water pumps, air pumps and the likes have to have the correct pulleys for such a fast engine spin and "stock" they did not because most folks don't run their cars that hard.

Mine goes off dead smack at 7k.

I probably hit mine 2-3 times a week, depending on my driving...

would it do any damage to my car to rev it up to like 7500 or 8000 just to see if my buzzer even works?

It is good for a rotary to redline it every drive. It helps keep carbon buildup to a minimal. I purchased a 88auto from an older lady a few years back. It's funny cause the lady said she NEVER ran the car hard. When I purchased the car it had about 40psi in the rear and 50 in the front and only at 88k on the odometer. Rotarys need to rev.

Yeah, I have a friend that loves the sound of the buzzer. Everytime he drives my 7 he tries to make it go of. He loves it, he thinks it sounds just like a stall warning horn

Ive owned Five 1st Gens(80,81,three 83s) and this is the first Ive ever heard of a buzzer. Ive taken all these cars to red and have never heard anything. The one I drive now goes to red every other day.
Where is the buzzer and where is it wired to?
