rewiring hacked up OE stereo, what goes where?

i got an error, apoligies if this posts twice...

My recently purchased 84 gslse has some issues surrounding its stereo system. Someone put in an aftermarket unit, and decided that it didn't need most of the wiring, or the little joystick by the window switches, so much of that is gone. I found another 84 gslse radio, and all wiring, but much of it was disconnected, so im somewhat lost. A wiring diagram would be a great help, or just a simple description of where all those funky black and white computer looking plugs go, or even some pics if ya got 'em. Much appreciative,

~Jesse
(and yes, i couldn't find anything with search :-(

In case I was a bit too general, this is the radio with tape, EQ, external amps, joystick fade thingy, the whole nine yards...

Well, i hate to break it to ya, but when most people put in an after market stero, they generally rip out most of the old wireing. As for a diagram, try a haynes manual...

Here's what I did.

First I took out my seats, and rear luggage bays. Then I took off my running board pieces so I can get under the carpet.

I removed the two small amps from under the luggage bays. I pulled the rear speaker covers off (as well as the kick plates) and jotted the color codes for each speaker.

When you remove the amps, you don't have to cut any wires, the speakers plugs just go back together. I removed the little **** deal because it sucked and put a standard coin holder from Mazda in.

I then got me a "lighted" hot wire tester. These things are basically a metal rod with a light in the handle. You ground one end on the chassis, turn on your ignition and check the radio wires for the hot lead.

Make sure you note which wire came from you antenna back there if it's electric.

Now, just rewire the new stereo knowing your hot wire, and your speaker wires.

It's that easy.

Thanks directfreak, thats what i was hoping to find... The haynes manual doesn't have diagrams for the gsl-se stereo, and the ones for the normal radio suck. Guess i'll start yanking wires and putting the Dmm on them. It'll be interesting to see if those amps still work, considering it looks like they were sitting in 2 inchs of water at some point...

Eh, tried to sort it out this weekend, there are just too many cut wires!! Does anyone have any more diagrams, like how the wiring harnesses that go into the amp look and exactly what color wire goes where? Still a little lost on the computer looking cables too, I think im missing the set that goes to the little joystcik..
thanks,

~Jesse

You don't need the joystick, you can bypass it altogether by removing it.

Ok, here we go:
the 8 pin din connector that's listed on the diagram from the link I posted up at the top is the same across the board. The tuner connects to the 8 pin DIN on the tape deck, and the tape deck's 8 pin DIN connects to the EQ. The pinouts are the same.

For my rear amp, I took a 6 pin din, converted it to RCA's, and used the OEM speaker wires to connect to the speakers. It was quite simple, really. The 6 pin DIN supplies remote turn on (Batt + line), and signal. Since the tape deck is between the tuner and the EQ, i'm betting that the tape deck just takes over and cuts off the tuner (if you look at the DIN 8 pinout, it's got input and output lines, so the audio path goes like this:
tuner -> tape -> eq -> tape (passive on this end) -> tuner (volume) -> joystick thingy (fad / bal) -> amps)

side note to confuse you more:
The system w/ the joystick only uses the front output 6 pin DIN from the tuner. That goes into a little converter so it can plug into the 8 pin DIN harness that goes to the joystick. The joystick is what actually splits it into Front and Rear.

It seems kinda confusing, but if you think about it, this is the only way that you can keep the tuner's volume control working. This does mean you can daisy chain devices off and just have them interrupt the previous device's audio path and take over. Not that we're talking about an easy task, but it is do-able. If you guys have more questions, feel free to ask me, I think I've learned alot about the stock stereo at this point from tearing it apart.

Now, does anyone know how to keep my MSD box from making NASTY noises into the speakers, since I added the thing the audio got this really high pitched, rpm sensative noise in it. All my grounds are good, and I can't for the life of me get it out! Damnit!

FWIW, YMMV
