Rewinds pitting

I have had Konig Rewinds on my 84 for a couple of years now, and last winter I had to drive the car for a little while, I kept the car pretty clean but the rear wheels started to pit and corrode anyway. I tried mother's aluminum polish to see if I could make them look any better, but the label said not to use if the polish doesnt turn black after you rub it on, which it didn't. Does anyone else have this problem an a good way to restore the rims to at least look a little better?

The blackening simply means the aluminum is being polished off. If it doesn't turn black, then there may be a clear coat on the wheels. That will have to be removed before polishing and reapplied afterwards unless you like to polish rims semi-annually.
