Reverse lights

What causes the reverse lights to stay on even in forward gears?

Thanks,
Eric

The reverse switch is on the tranny, that would be a good place to start. This is assuming you have a manual.

There is a little switch in the tranny as trochoid stated, I had an 83 that would do that only in 5th gear.... I hooked up the little metal clip and it worked fine.... I freaked out my friends all the time, I would be on the interstate at about 90 mph with them following me, Then I would throw it it 5th and the reverse lights would come on, I would tap the breaks and they always thought I miss shifted and put it in reverse..lol

You shouldn't have the external regulator box with an '86 alt. as they are already internally regulated if you wired it up correctly... Although, that probably wouldn't have anything to do with reverse lights.
