Reverse came back, but causes other issue
I have an 82 12a Automatic with 41K original miles
Since I bought the car in the summer it has not had reverse. I could rev it up and get about the amount of force of one person pushing and the tyranny just freewheels.
Tonight I put it in reverse held my foot on the brake and floored it. The reverse jammed into gear with the full power the gear should have. I could go foraward and backwards in my driveway good. I did that awhile to besure it was good.
Then I went to make a road test and when it was time for it to shift two second the car began shuttering like the tranny was locking up. Than that subsided and the car drove as normal.
Than I went to reverse, and I had the original problem I started with. So I held the brake and floored it. The reverse grabbed and worked like normal.
I went to drive away, and it shuttered trying to shift to 2nd. Then it drove normal.
I then stopped and tried to reverse; but was gone again, and I had to hold the brake.
Then I tried to start from 2nd gear, but the tranny was in a locked up state but not stalling engine. I put it in 1st started to drive then pushed it to 2nd, and it slid to a stop on gravel.
I checked the fluid using the fill plug method, and it was right on. New red color, with recent filter/gasket change.
I suspect that there is a shared 2nd and reverse solenoid in the transmission. And I could just replace the solenoid.
Please help me figure this out before it binds up on me.
