to replace or repair (dash harness)

Whats up guys. New to the fourm and to rx7s. I have a 82 rx7 that mechanically is really nice but electrical wise its garbage.

here is a list of things that dont work i need to fix.

-running lights
-dash lights
-headlight up and down switch
-defrosters
-cigarette lighter
-wipers

and im sure there are more but those are the ones im focused on fixing right now. So right off the bat i noticed the fuse box has a nice melted spot in it. I cant read what use to be there because it melted the cover too but i believe it once said tailight illumination judging by looking at another rx7 from a different year cover. Then right out the fuse box i can see a melted wire that melted threw the harness throught the entire under the dash area and appears to end at around the cigarette lighter/radio area.

so here is what i have fixed so far FOR NOW. I have all the parking lights working because i wired them at the ignitoin swith connector together with the headlights so they come on at the same time along with the dash lights. The guy i bought it from told me that wipers wont turn off so he removed the fuse. But i put it back and havent had any problems yet atleast. O and also my dashlight dim really bad when i turn on the high beams and if the car is not on and i turn on the high beams the exhaust overheat light comes on.

So what im asking is should i just keep wiring everything all over or just replace the harness? Anyone know a place or someone that has one? Or what years will work for mine if i try to go to the junkyard?? I will try to get a pic of the wire that is melted i would really like to know exactly what it was for. Also the wiring diagram link that was posted in the faq section doesnt work. Does anyone have a complete harness wiring diagram online??

PS: how the hell do you get the 2 circular connectors disconnected from the the back of the gauge cluster i dont want to break them.

i would just replace the whole harness to hell with trying to go through all the mess. im sure you can find one in the first gen for sale section of the forum, try to get the same year harness that way its easyer on you..as there are several car's being parted at the moment. plus it will give you a chance to go through the new harness and re-black tape it and whatnot. i would replace that fusebox as well...a melted spot? wow, someone effed up really good as i have never heard of that happening. you can get the factory service manuel from a forum member here i think his name is fox or something like that. the F.S.M. has everything you will need.

as for the circular connector's you would have to pull the guage cluster and unplug them from the back.

in anycase you have your work cut out for you. good luck!

The release lever for the round cluster connectors is near the center of the plug. Pull the lever away from the center of the plug using the tab at the bottom of the plug for leverage.
