If your doing a simple rebuild, and there's no chipping or flaking in the chrome. Just run it!!! The refinishing is suposed to be for gouges, and low spots from damged apex seals.
It's a waste of cash to get them refinished if the chrome is still smooth.
But..
If you do have damaged chrome, and your still talking about REC. They do offer a Cermet coating. It's not all that cheap either tho, and it's brittle.
I still think that the rechrome process that Goopy offers is better for the cash spent.

 

My motor is currently complete and running, but I was thinking acquiring another set of housings to have resurfaced, and building a different motor with cryo apex seals, and upgraded gears and bearings, building a 8-9k rpm motor. I read about the cermet/ceramic coatings, on the rotors, irons and housings, i dont think i need that, I just want to build a really well built street motor. Im new to rotary, I know a lot about the rotary, but this is my first, all advice is greatly appreciated

 

I'm kinda in the same boat bud.
This is my first build as well, but I have gathered a ton of awesome information!! Most of it came from Rob at pineapple racing. That guy is awesome!
But if your just gonna build a spare mill. I suggest finding one, and stripping it down before ordering parts you won't need.
I did the same thing.
Choose your performance level, and what you want to expect.
Then you can figure out a budget, and the parts you'll need as you go.

 

I'm in the same boat my housings look the same has yours. some chrome is of very little thou but the edges are very Sharpe I measured my housing I got 62.88mm at the coldest point has that bloke on pineapple racing said its junk and shrunk. that guy seems to know is stuff.

 

the only other option is a 13B housing that has been cut down to 12A size and had the coolant seal lands cut in. Atkins sells them but they aren't much cheaper than Goopy with the rechroming. in fact i think they were slightly more expensive.

of course if you go that route you must use a matched pair of housings, since the exhaust ports will be 13B proportionally sized.

 

My one housing is useable, but it has a low spot from corrosion that could lead to a seal failure. The other with the chipped chrome is a paper weight... I know about that sharp leading edge from where the apex seal rides to. (Damn near needed a stitch after running my finger on it)
I have 2 used housing in decent shape on the back burner that a member on here is hooking me up with. I'll keep the one for a spare should I have an oopsy.
I'm being cheap. The Goopy rechromed housings are really cool! But just to expensive...
If I was building a race motor I'd probably go that route.
I haven't heard to much about those milled housings tho??

The goopy rechromed are $575 with no core on the 12a housings. Not a bad price I guess...
But I actually have a pair of good housings coming.

it's been reduced to 5 now so ur good. and lame it's not. we want people that will be active members of the forum not for those that have no interest in the cars and just want to sell off parts or car that they inherited some how. this is a place rotary enthusiasts and to find technical advice first, that just so happens to have a classifieds section. if all someone wants to do is unload parts or a car, hit up craigslist, we don't want u here.

sawyer10702 did PM me asking to buy some rotor housings. Unfortunately, the ones I have for sale are early 12A and will not work on a first gen RX-7. He's just looking for parts.

There are some other valid reasons for having a post count before buying/selling. Before the post count rule was put into place, I would get a lot of zero post users asking to buy parts. Once I responded, I would never hear from them again. It still happens, but not as frequent as before. I will not sell to ANY zero post user. I ask them to get 10 post first.

 

well, not everyone feels they have much to contribute though. it happens infrequently that someone just stalks the forum but may have some usable parts for others.

Even tho I'm not running an RX7 I have gathered a ton of good info toward my swap. Lots of good people on here willing to help out a fellow gear head. I wouldn't let the minor details wreck a good thing.

 

I have recently found some good housings from a 85 gsl rx7 now I'm contemplating on a fel-pro gasket set! is this a good choice from rock-auto seem to be most inexpensive. can anyone chime in on this!

 

wasn't aware fel pro started making the housing seals, i have no experience with it though. i checked and verified that it does appear they do now have a full gasket kit though, not sure why they waited this long to do so... the sales are already way low now versus decades ago.

however, for not much more i would go with the atkins set, they use OEM bits in theirs.

could be atkins or OEM is selling them through felpro now(not sure if they do that sort of thing or not), but their picture stinks so i couldn't tell ya. nippon reinz also now sells replica seals.

I'd go with the Atkins stuff.
They offer different levels of kits depending on what you need. I find the prices pretty decent.

 

The fel pro set is the best bang for the buck by far. I use it every time, even on my 13B's. Don't use the oil pan seal, cause its useless, but the rest is factory oe type coolant seals.

You still need apex seals but that's where Atkins come into play.

 

when you account for shipping, you probably aren't saving anything by buying from 2 different vendors.

 

Its 1000 bucks or so for the 13b rebuild kit with apex seals. Its $130 for the soft seals from Fel-Pro and $300 for the apex seals from atkins. My maths say 450 is less than 1000
