removing third member.

title pretty much gets right to the point. only question is can i just loosen the nuts on the back of the drum on the axle itself and slide the *********** out a couple inches or do i need to remove everything in the drum to pull them out? ive done this many times on toyotas but never on a rx7

If you can unbolt the plate that holds the axle in the housing without removing everything else then you should be able to get away with that. The only concern I would have is if the brake line will give you enough remove to pull the assembly out the 2-3 inches necessary.

Assembly on the other hand may not be as much fun given that those bolts are not the longest and can fall out.
