Most of the tar under my seats was removed with a gas leak i had inside the car for a while.... I didn't notice but my floors were soaked in gas and when i removed the carpets the tar had all come apart....

I just started removing it today. Got all of it in the cargo area removed. Did it in 30F and it chipped out really well. I also kept all the of the tar(in my shop vack anyway) so when i finish the fron section next weekend i will wiegh it. I got pics to post soon hopefully aswell. My exhuast is extremely loud inside now even with the windows closed. Not that I'm complaning or anything. I can't wait to get rid of the passenger side tar so I can hear a little header noise inside.

No weight yet, I'm not done!

I'm keeping all the stuff in a bag so I can weigh it, and I'll definately post the weight when I'm done. One more day I think... so tedious! Next I gotta sand then prime.

What does a sound deadening tar do? Where is this located?

it's glued to the floor - the entire floor.

In some cars it's also used inside the doors (BMWs, f'rinstance)

As the name implies, it deadens sound. Without it a car sounds tinny and thrums at speed - with it you get that vaultlike quiet associated with newer cars, with the inherent weight penalties.

Well if you take out the sound deadening tar...wouldn't that make the cockpit sound like a bomb blasting zone when you drive? That would suck if you are listening to music...

Sounds like alot of work, and I suppose a step in the right direction......but, is it really going to show any noticeable difference?

Or is this like the "yellow sticker on a Honda gives you 10hp" theory?

Any weight you remove will make a difference. This alone may not make a noticable difference, but if you add up everything that doesn't make a noticable difference together, you will see one.

Understandable....

But,

Are the people doing this, actually possessing a car with other mods to necessitate shaving the what, 4 lbs of material?

Or would they be just like the 100hp Civics, with the Yellow sticker, who now think they have a drag car?

I don't mean to step on anyone's toes.......I'm just curious if this is some jump on the bandwagon no cost mod, or if these people maybe race.....or what?

Personally, I'd like to have a louder exhaust, but an even quieter interior. The wind noise from those rear vent holes always makes me think my door popped open, or a window is down, when I pass a car closely.

Well, as I said in my start of this thread, it's a free mod, not a huge power gain. What do you get for free? A couple tenths off an autocross lap time, maybe. But it is real, and I won't be nullifying it with large stereo stuff like the typical fast-sticker crowd.

Simple physics: less weight = more acceleration = less braking = higher cornering speeds = more fun.

UPDATE: Jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick, the air chisel is the way to go. I assembled mine, oiled it, pressed it to the tar and squeezed the trigger once. WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM and about 20 minutes of work turned into mere seconds. It's like the difference between cutting down a large tree with a hatchet or a chainsaw. And it chipped off larger cleaner chunks, too. Amazing, really.

Also, here in west Michigan the weather is hovering around the freezing mark. Even with my kerosene heater kinda warming my garage the tar is hard and brittle. What do you expect, it's 20 years old.

I'm collecting mine in a cardboard box, and I'm suprised at how heavy it is. I should finish it sometime this week, hell with the air chisel I could run home on lunch today and quick knock it out if I felt like it.
I predict about 30 lbs, maybe 40. I'll post it.

Anyone try Dynamat to replace the tar, that way you can remove it at the track, and put it in on the road...

Is Dynamat lighter or heavier than Tar?
It POR-15 lighter or heavier than the stock Tar?

Any other ways to get rid of the noise, that don't result in a weight penalty?

How bad is the noise?

THe puroses of doing this.. at least for my friends and I (refer to post on first page), was that we are going road racing, adding a 100lb roll cage and doing everything we can to keep the car right at 2400lbs. It is PURE weight savings. And oh yeah.. its about 35 lbs.

How about adding a couple strips of Dynamat or the like after removing all of the tar? This might take care of a good portion of the drum head effect. A couple strips would only weigh a pound or two. Kind of like having your cake and eating it too (though I could never figure out why one would want cake and not be able to eat it ...)

Noise, vibration, harshness... the Jedi cares not about these things.

But somebody post a link to this dynamat stuff anyway, eh?

I was actualy thinking that adding a small amount of sound insulation might actualy be a fairly good idea. My car is not a "race only" car... and I would rather not have to wear earplugs all the time!

How much could a few small pieces of that stuff weigh...? Less than what I'm removing i would guess?

Not yet. I was involved in a home remodeling project that had been sucking up my spare time, but now that my cat's medical bills just broke my bank I'm back to the no-cost car project.

Except for now I'm here at work on a Saturday when I could be laughing with delight as I air-chisel like a madman.

Oh man thats a keeper!

But I don't have a scale as of yet, but I could probably go to the shipping place and just put a box full of the tar on the scale? YEAH!

Not quite doen yet however, I still have the horrid part under the steering wheel to get. Saved the best for last! So far it seems to be a fair amount though. Not really sure if it's worth it in the end? Everything adds up.

I'll repost when I'm done.

People do a lot worse to save 40 pounds...

My goal is to get my car somewhere around 2200 before a cage goes in it. 40 pounds is a GREAT jump on that goal. Bye-bye sound insulation!

I may not even have to get out the holesaw...

I have to admit, that's more than I expected. I may do this (along with a couple of strategically placed strips of Dynamat) when I do my bin rust fix. I'll have half the interior out anyway...
