removing intake and carb... Q's ???

Well I'm 99% sure my intake o-ring is leaking coolant into the intake. So I'm removing it and rebuilding the carb as well. Anything else I should do while I have both of these off?

Also I just replaced the radiator with a new one, should I hold off adding coolant back in the system until I get the intake off? I'd assume it has to be drained when removing the intake?

You spill a little coolant when you remove tha manifold but not very much.

I'd wait to fill the sustem untill your ready to run the car again for cleanliness sake.

I can't think of anything else to do while it's apart.

The motor still has fluid in it, but your saying it won't overflow what is in the rad right?

Id like to drive it to work the rest of the week, the other rx is making an odd noise I haven't figured out yet.

-install new OMP lines while they are easy to get at!! Oldies will be brittle and you don't want those croaking at some incovenient time!
-new belts
-new rad and HEATER hoses

so there is o-rings on the intake...are there just the 2 where the coolant passes through? the round holes?

if anyone knows the diameter of the o-rings that go there, please let me know too...i just replaced my intake/carb, and didn't put any o-rings on, just the gasket. and water is pissing out right above one of the coolant passageways. god dammit!!!

OMP lines have been replaced already, Just bought a new rad, hoses and thermostat. Picked up the manifold gasket and the carb rebuild kit and carb 2 intake gasket. Anyone know the 0-ring sizes off hand that go on the intake? Or has anyone just tried blocking the coolant going to the intake? I can't see how that helps anything from a performance standpoint.

I'm pretty sure thats what the last person who had my car did as well. I hae little coolant puddles aboe the intake where it mounts to teh block. I get a nice little water smoke cloud on start up. Then it goes away? We'll see. If I get mine off here soon I'l let U know.

I would rocomend going to Mazda for the Gasket and the O-rings

Gasket part Number 1881-13-111B Cost $4.20
O-Rings Part Number 8527-13-113 Cost $2.96 (x 2)

I just got mine direct from Mazda took about 2-3 days

I make my own intake gaskets out of gasket paper and the parts store has o-rings for under a buck.

If the rad is full, it will **** all over the floor when the intake is removed. You can loose easily loose 1/4 of your coolant. If you don't want to deal with the o-rings, or need the carb being heated by the coolant, install 22mm freeze plugs in the housings.

If you can hold off, I would. If ya cant, just remember to drain some. It will still come out a little bit.

I forgot about the coolent passages, when I was putting on my Dell, I cracked that last nut, and it came a gully washer! Got all over the garage and exhaust manifold! Pain. then I had to deal with coolent burn off, just a nightmare!

Thats a "CHEAP" way to go, And if you want to fine but for the extra $10 dollars is it worth being "CHEAP"?

Auto parts store stuff is mostly crap.......Crap is ok for a light bulb or a screw or windshiel wipers but not Coolant componants and gaskets......

Just my .02c

I agree^^^

I mean I know us FB owners tend to be so-called "cheap bastards" But thats just down right chinnese cheap man! I mean I paid 7 bucks for my gasket and o-rings from mazdatrix.
The gasket is precut to be a perfect fit. I mean come on.

But you do it your way, and ill do it mine. We are both getting it done, just one of us is working hard not smart!

Inexpensive, yes, cheap, not really. The Mazda dealer is a 50 minute drive from my house. Most of the time they do not stock parts, they have to order them. In 5 years, I have made 2 trips to the dealer, once for a license plate bracket for my 2nd gen, the last one for crush washers for the 2nd gen fmoc install in the widebody. Dealer doesn't even stock thermostats, figure that one. Victoria British is 15 minutes farther, I usually go there.

I have never had a problem with making my own gaskets, and for what it's worth, the crush washers from the dealer came out of an assortment box that I could have bought, in town. at the local auto parts store. While oem parts are fine and in some cases the only choice or option, many non-oem parts work just as well.

When I have people drive 60 miles to my house for me to work on thier car, the last thing I need is to have their car or the shop tied up for for days waiting for the dealer to order something they should stock, or take nearly 3 hours out of my day to drive to VB.

Your comment reminds me of some of the 2nd and 3rd gens owners who feel they have to buy the HKS or other big name brand fmic kits, because that is the only way to go, for them. The sad part of it is they could have built a better system for less than half the money, if they are creative and determined enough.

And before you reply back, just to let you know, I don't do ghetto fab. My work is thorough and quality. If it's not done right, I won't do it. If an owner wants ghetto fab, I send him/her on thier way.

As far as the crap comment, I never put crap windshield wipers on a car. They are a safety item, something one should never cheap out on.

Just my 2 cents back.

I agree with trochoid. The answer for too many people on here is "just buy a new one...it's only $20 more than rebuilding", and then they complain about not having any money. I'm an older person (50) and have worked my way into a position where I can afford to buy new parts for my cars, yet I prefer to rebuild and restore whenever I can, and have no problem with making my own gaskets when I need to. Sadly, it seems to be a lost art.

Just my $0.02.

Which ever route you take on the O-Rings make sure you use some
HI-Temp RTV Gasket Sealer around and on them. Let it Dry for 24hrs.
I even put a small amount around the Gasket area where the O-Rings make contact in that area.
(Small Amount).
Use your finger to clean off any excess.

I've made my own gaskets many times and never had a problem. I just use some RTV sealant on both sides to ensure a good seal and leave it at that. Making gaskets is actually quite easy, and much cheaper than buying precut gaskets. A roll of paper gasket material is like $20 and that gets you probably 10 intake gaskets, compared to 1 precut gasket for $10. I can't even get an oil pan gasket around here without buying the whole gasket set. The mazda dealer here is about 20 min away and it sucks. It took them an hour to find the part numbers for the door seals I wanted to order, and then it took them 3 months just to get 2 of the 6 seals I ordered. The others never even came in.
