rearend conversion
i know this is probably so easy and ill probably look dumb, but ill ask anyways. i have the axles and 3rd member from a GSLSE and a spare rearend with an open differential. if i swap out the axles and 3rd member it will be the exact same thing as a GSLSE rearend right? also the rearend i have is from an 84. i just wanted to know before i went through the trouble of doing it. thanks.

You can use the GSL-SE 3rd member with a GSL or GS rear end. The GSL-SE's axles will not fit the GSL or the GS casing. Yes you would still end up with a 4:10 ratio minus the GSL-SE rotors and calipers. Im in the situation as you right now.

GSL / GSL-SE Axle I:nterchange
It is my understanding that the rear end housing (axle housing) is the same part for the GSL and GSL-SE in 1984-85.
I installed a set of GSL-SE axles in my 1984 GSL rear end housing, and had no problems. All 1984 and 1985 RX-7s have the larger diameter rear axles and front axles. The GSL-SE has a different bolt pattern for the wheels, of course.
In my particular case, I was doing a brake conversion to the 2nd Gen brakes, and bought the GSL-SE axles, had them redrilled with the 5 bolt pattern. Some details of my conversion are shown at:
