rear end gears

I have an 84 se, and I was wondering if there were any other rear ends that came with a better gear for acceleration, a bigger gear I guess. Id also be appreciative of anyone who could tell me exactly what gear I already have in there, I dont have the lsd rear end its the standard diff. thx

The 84' GSL-SE came with an LSD rear end and 4:10 gears...The highest that came in 1st gen models.
Other non GSL-SE's came with 3:90 i believe...and no LSD unless it was a GSL model. The GSL-SE also has the biggest disc brakes and Better bolt pattern.

You can also get 4.44, 4.78, 4.88, and 5.12 gears. Look in the FAQ sticky. Theres links to mazdatrix, and Felix's site which talks about this.

Another way to increase accelleration without changing ring and pinion is to go to a smaller diameter tire than stock.

So if the stock tire is a 14" rim and on its a 205/60/14 you could go 15" 205/50/15. Since the overall diameter of the wheel is less the car will accellerate faster thru the gears.

On my GSL-SE autox car I am running 13" 235/45/13, which works well when chasing pylons.

Tire and wheel calc

The other way is to find a four wheel drive For Ranger pickup and take the ring and pinon out of the front dif. I believe it is the 94-96 models that work and have a 4.44 gear ratio. If you run a couple searchs or go to the solo maita website you can find the specifics.
Good luck
