RB muffler question..?
I'm looking to get a new muffler since I got a ticket for "inadequate exhaust" and I figured I'd go with the Racing Beat muffler to tone it down a notch.
I have a RB header collected to a RB presilencer and a 2.25 pipe to a RACTIVE muffler, the kind with the removable tip which doesn't sound bad at all to me, but I was hoping to tone it down some since I'm driving it everyday now and have Johnny Law harassing me w/tickets.
Anyways, I call RB today to order the muffler... thinking no big deal and... they have two types.
The first type is a 2" single pipe entrance, which means I'd have to go from 2.25" piping to a smaller 2" before I enter the muffler, or...
they have the Roadrace type which is two pipes collected to a single 2.5" pipe right before it enters the muffler, which would then be bigger then what I'm running, which concerns me b/c I'm worried about noise more then a extra 2 hp.
Any ideas..???

Haha, the cop was sitting on the side of the road watching this intersection and I got caught at the light... I was in the front right in his face. I usually keep my rpms low and shift at like 2.5K just until I get away but it didn't work this time b/c I had to drive up a pretty big hill right after the light turned...
I sarcasticly meant an extra 2hp btwn the two pipes entering the muffler 2" vs 2.5"... not the system as a whole... besides it's probally .5hp anyways.

The Streetport version is the same unit,with dual pipes setup for the 81-82 cars that merges into a single 2.5" pipe before the inlet.
Ive run it on my car for years,and its very quiet.....in fact,I pass CA noise standards with it.Granted,Im running a turbo and cat,but its also a 3" system before the muffler. At anything but full throttle/RPMs,theres no way a cop would ever look twice.
Even with headers and no cat,the RB mufflers are very good at being quiet,not to mention long lasting.

I have just the RB power pulse muffler behind a Road Race collected header. Very civil and is no problem to cruise with. Once you open it up she sings very nice. If you go RB you'll be as quiet as stock until you open it up. You may even notice a little bit more torque down low

Alright, I've already decided that RB muffler is the way to go.... that's my point of making the thread...
I was caught off guard when I tried to order and there was a choice of a 2" inlet or a 2.5" being I'm already running 2.25" piping. I didn't want to make a spur of the moment decision and get stuck with the wrong choice. At this point I'm wondering if it even matters.
My question is should I drop down a 1/4 of a inch or go up a 1/4 of a inch...?
1/2 an inch difference I would *think* should effect noise, backpressure, etc... or am I thinking tooo much here..???
Steve, ur exhaust does sound sweet... after just listening to it for the third time.

Both the RB mufflers include the over the axle pipe, on the the SP it's 2 pipes that collect at the top of the bend. I guess if you got that one you'd have to cut that piece off, I think thats what steve84gs TII did. That would probably be best so you're not choking it down, or replace the pipe from the presilencer with 2" (the piece that RB doesn't have) and get the single inlet muffler for $30. less.
I think I read on here that the SP muffler is better flowing, might have been Rotarygod that wrote it?

Go to court and challenge the ticket. Say you had no choice because the original parts where non existant and no dealers stock them. In addition you can't use salvage because the old cats are burnt up. I.E. WTF are we supposed to do when this **** starts rusting out. I have had judges throw tickets out just for trying...

rb mufflers are way over rated and are way over priced...
And vashner is right you can challenge that ticket and say that due to the car being as old as it is replacements part for that car are 1. hard to come by 2. that muffler is the stock replacement. 3. it's your daily commute to and from work... 4. and what or why was the real reason he pulled you over... 5. plus going to court always gets the charges dropped to a lower charge or just dropped all together...
In the end it's worth the time and effort to fight the ticket and let justice serve you...

I've been lurking the forums for over 8 years now and never heard any complaints of a RB muffler in the quality dept or not being able to hold up to the test of time. For the extra bucks compared to a boinger muffler to me seems worth it, and hell I'm on a budget big time... It looks stockish also... big plus factor for me, I been dying to get rid of the fartcan look.

hey guys, i dont mean to hijack and didnt want to make a new thread for a silly question. last summer when my car was on the road. i had to replace my muffler, i got a good deal on one and fitted it my self, and it was able to stand up to my 12a. nice single in single out stainless pack.
iam going to get a header from racing beat and wasn't 100% sure. if i buy the Streetable Header/Collector 79-80 RX-7 (12A) and Mini Presilencer 79-80 RX-7 and the gaskets this will bolt right in to the rest of my setup correct ?

it actually shouldnt make a big difference either way
BUT
both mufflers sound the same, and the 2.5" probably flows more, so you want the big one

Your insane.
Nothing application specific is cheap,and they damn sure have proven their reliability over the years.$60 universal mufflers are worthless on a rotary,and the high quality ones that do hold up are almost always loud.Not everyone wants noise,and no one wants to have their muffler blow out every year.Quality cost money,and no one is arguing that RB mufflers dont hold up.
And if you think they are restrictive,just ask me how well my car accelerates.My setup is the epitomy of long term,high temp abuse in regards to rotary mufflers,and the RB unit I installed over 7 years ago is working just fine today.

doubt it. like i said before the difference isnt going to be big (less than 5hp), but noise is the same so you might as well get the better muffler
