Angry Rag Is Bad!!

Yeah, like the title says, RAG IS BAD!! RAGE AT RAG!! Well, only when it's in your exhaust ports when welding and only when that rag in the exhaust ports gets pushed right inside your rotary...

I was welding up the two exhaust "leaks", AKA the little ports that are intended for the thermal reactor on the 79-80 12As, and to prevent being blown up, I stuffed a couple small (1x2 inches) pieces of rag inside the main exhaust ports. All went well, and the ports were welded up beautifully, and I pulled what I thought was the only rag left after the vacuum was in there sucking up all the flack. Well, I missed getting one of those pieces of rag.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I have a 1x2" piece of rag in my rotary. I pulled the carby and the intake manifold off, and found quite a few torn up pieces of rag.

I was wondering what you guys would recommend for removing rag from a rotary?! I'm sure someone on here must've had a similar problem. My car won't run right now, it's losing too much compression on that rotor (I think the rag got between the apex seal and the housing). I have the intake manifold off, and the carb, so there's not much problem with access to the inside. I was thinking of sticking a scope light inside and seeing if I could see anything out the exhaust ports. I don't think this'll work though...

HELP!!

Jeff

Why did you feel it was necessay to weld up those ports? When I first got my header it leaked like hell...but I took it to a machine shop who fixed it for 60$ Armed with a perfectly flat mounting face I went and re-installed the header with no leaks ot this day. Well none that I can hear, I ran the "leaky" header and straight pipes for two weeks so I'm pretty familiar with the noise. Sorry I can't think of any ideas to help...if I think of something I'll post. Good Luck. -George

I was totally expecting something different from this subject name..

Anyhow, I guess all you can do is pull the plugs to make it easy to hand crank, and pull all the little bits out that you can, then get something to get all the little fuzzies out of there from the rag (like maybe lots and lots of ATF).. the crap is (I guess) wet now and won't fly out with a vacuum probably, so I guess after you get all the chunks out, maybe run it or get a little flame going in there, to burn little bits, then vacuum them out, or maybe they came out already, I dunno.. ghetto engineering..

heh, yeah, ghetto engineering.... well, I pulled my intake manifold and founf a couple of chunks big enough to block the proper flow of air/fuel mixture.... put almost all of it back together, hopefully will be able to try starting her tomorrow..... hopefully.....
