Mine blows fuses each time it is turned on antenna disconnected and I need to remove it. Seems you have to remove the gear shift surround before you do anything? I'm restoring a 1984 GSL-SE from a 15 year sit and have started a build log over on the *** engine forum if anyone is interested.
lift off the gray plastic shifter surround. it will reveal 2 screws at the bottom of the upper surround. heater fan and control ***** just pull off of the shafts. upper portion of the radio surround is just held in at the top by friction tabs, just pull outward.

Thanks Michael, I'll give it a try.
This is a South Carolina car. My son noticed it for auction in Bishopsville. I made an on-line bid at $1600.00 and won it. Body rust free and I just got it running with great compression. I have been working on it for four months, still lot's to do.
Be aware; there are 2× bullet connectors on a blue and blue-green wire inside the shifter surround area, which appear that they should be connected. DON'T.
Those are for the illumination for auto-trans models, and connecting them creates a short that will leave you troubleshooting electrics for months before you figure out what you did wrong. Why Mazda put opposing bullet connectors right next to each other is beyond me, but this has been the bane of many who didnt know better and hooked them up.
Thanks, I noticed those two wires. But I think I have found the root of my problem. Turn on the ignition switch and the radio/radio antenna relay fuse blows. Disconnected the relay put in a new fuse and it doesn't blow. Problem is, there doesn't seem to be any replacement relays
available.
You could wire it up to a manual, Double-Throw-Double-Pole (DPDT) switch that would provide antenna motor up in one direction and down in the other. Probably want to get a spring centered version of this so the motor doesn't hit the end of the line and either rip the plastic gear strip out, or toss your antenna overboard. At both extremes, youll hear an audible ClickClickClickClickClick that lets you know its up or down.
Apart from that, Mazda used this type of relay in many cars from the era, and you might have some luck finding a similar setup and adapting it, if you're handy.
Thanks, bigger problem is the radio/cassette complex doesn't come on. I'm not sure if the relay has to be in-play for it to do so. I powered it remotely as pictured.
Thanks, wonder if it works. There is another used for $35 somewhere in California. Hate to take a chance. But, I can't get the radio to power up anyway using both 12VDC inputs. Nothing! Thought I found the trouble when I took the cover off and discovered a fuse, but it checked good.
Gave up. Put the non-functioning radio back in with out the defective antenna relay. It didn't work on the bench so I had no reason to think that it would work in the car and it didn't. Fills a hole. If I could find a Clarion repair site i would send it off, but these days they are difficult to find.
