Radiator fan

I was just wondering how important the radiator fan shroud? Is it just there to stop things getting stuck in the fan, or does it help the fan draw air thru the radiator and not from where around it?

My car doesn’t have one, so should I be looking for one or not important?

I think they are reasonably important, but I assume you would have noticed a temp prob by now, if it weren't alright.

it helps focus the air that the fan draws in. Makes it to were a majoriety of the air comes directly through the radiator. Without it, it draws air from pretty much were ever it wants....
Probobly a litle more likely to over heat in stop and go traffic...

The fan, working in conjunction with the shroud, creates the low air pressure gradient on the backside of the radiator that draws cool air through the fins from the front side of the radiator. Without the shroud, the efficiency of the fan's ability to create this low pressure gradient is greatly diminished. <<<sniff>>> Isn't that so, Jeeves?

good explanation, mar3

it's exactly like a ducted fan vs. an open propeller, but mar covered it
