Rad Fan, not turning off

I am finally getting to the point where I can drive my '82 and I am noticing that the radiator fan NEVER turns off... it is always on and its always running FAST... I think this might be why I cant get my engine truly warm which is causing a few issues... but anyways... would that be a Fan Stat hiding somewhere or could it be as simple as the $5 thermostat?

Thanks

so i assume it is an aftermarket electric fan?

the stock fans run constantly since they are belt driven

maybe your thermostat is stuck, or missing, not allowing your car to heat up

If it's the stock fan, it is belt driven, but the speed of the fan is controlled by a clutch that connects the fan blades to the pulley. The clutch reacts to the temperature of the engine as it is transmitted through the pulley. These can be expected to die at this age. Mine started to stay fully engaged last year. Since then, I have converted to an e-fan with great success. It allows you to actually hear the engine and exhaust rather than just the big whoosh of the fan and it also reduces parasitic drag. (more horsepower) Not a lot of extra horsepower mind you, but with a stock 12A, every little bit helps.

true...i wonder how much slower a brand new mazda factory clutch would turn the fan until it heats up....seems all the first gen's i've known have fans that are always turning at a pretty good speed

im definately going to go efan, even though i kinda like the sound and look of the factory fan

What is involved in the Efan installation? seems like taking out the existing one would be pretty simple. but how is the wiring and stuff of the new fan and what Efan do you use?
