Racing Beat exhaust- which one?

I bought an 82 GSL a week or so ago, and initially thought I might enter it in the GRM $2006 Challenge next fall- turns out I started with too nice of a car and so to be competitive, I'd have to scrimp and save and dumpster dive more than I have time for. Since the end goal of this car isn't to be a supercheap rocket, but a nice semi-daily/autocrosser, I think I am scrapping the idea of trying to compete in that and focusing on a low-level restoration, learning some stuff, and then maybe going nuts later on.

I think I am going to go ahead and transplant a decent exhaust under there- since I have some carb issues to work out and there's some suspicion (per previous seller) that this engine might have been ported at some point, might as well go ahead and get the stuff on there before I tune the carb, right? ("Oh, and while I'm at it"itis is setting in already...)

So for my question:
Do I want the Streetport system or the "high-performance" system that uses the stock midpipe? I don't HAVE the stock midpipe right now (no muffler, just a cut off pipe behind the cats), so that's something to consider. Streetport system is complete bolt on, but pricier. "High performance" system is cheaper, but requires the pipe I don't have and would have to source or get made (negating some of the price difference). Sound isn't an issue, emissions isn't an issue, and I don't think I'll ever be that competitive in autocross anyway, so pretend there's no limit on modifications, just for fun.

I guess what I am asking is is there any reason NOT to pony up the extra couple hundred bucks for the Streetpot exhaust? Looking for owners impressions of both, if possible, on a 12a.

I have a stock 12A and use the full-streetport system. It is a noticable gain. Just save your stock exhaust and hang it on the garage wall. Bolt up the streetport exhaust (with dual presilencers) and you will not reget it.

I thought that wasn't "recommended" due to the intense heat burning out the packing of the muffler, unless you get one that's packed with steel? How's it holding up, what kind of muffler did you get, etc...

I got the streetport system, but I just use the headers -> custom pipe -> RB muffler.

I've never been happier with an exhaust upgrade.

I have the normal "high performance" system that you mentioned, and its great. However from what I've heard the difference is in low-end power. The streetport system improves the low-end in an attempt to make up for torque lost when streetporting the exhaust ports.

It depends on how much cash you have, but since youre already missing the midpipe and would have to get a new one, I would opt for the streetport.

Streetport system it is, then. Gotta get the old girl running right first, though- hate to drop 8 bills on an exhaust and then find that I need to rebuild something else before I can take full advantage.

Thanks guys.
