Racing Beat Exhaust
Racing Beat Exhaust
I have searched this question repeatedly, and though it has been asked, none have answered it. There were replies, but they did not answer the question:
If I get the standard Racing Beat Header (not road race), will the cat replacement pipe connect from the header to the mid-pipe? In not, does racing beat sell a pipe that does? If not, do they sell the flanges that connect to the header so than I can make my own connecting pipe?
I do not want to pay $200 for a "presilencer" that is just a really heavy duty glasspack with steel packing. I can buy the same steel-packed muffler for much less from another company and install it elsewhere in the system.
Please do not tell me how great your presilencer is and that you think I should just get one of those. $200 for one exhaust component is completely ridiculous. The PAIR of headers for my '82 ElCamino with a Chevy V8 cost $97, and they have lasted more than ten years. The rest of the exhaust system was $120 at a local shop.

Now on to your other comments I am not going to tell you how great my presilencer is. I will tell you that I have blown the hell out of every heavy duty glasspack i have ever used on a rotary and with a quickness. Yes the headers for you ElCamino were cheap and worked just fine. I highly recommend you look at the EGTs from your V-8 and compare them to what a rotary puts out, this is why exhaust components are heavier and more expensive. If you are going to have your local shop do your exhaust I would go to a racing shop that uses thicker walled tubing this will ensure a longer life. good luck!
Rotary engines abuse exhaust systems to a far greater degree than any piston engine, so we have to be picky. A $50 glasspack will not hold up to the extreme heat and pounding pulses of rotary exhaust, and chambered mufflers sound like *** on rotaries (just trust me on this one) and are usually very restrictive as well.
While I wouldn't pay for Racing Beat's bolt-on stuff, their universal mufflers and presilencers are absolutely worth every penny and then some. First time I got to look at one up close was just after I'd plunked down nearly $100 on a Borla, and seeing the incredible difference in build quality despite the relatively small price difference was a little depressing.
I just wish they sold a universal presilencer in 2.5". Odd how much more expensive the bolt-on components are than their universal counterparts.
And rotarydude is very right, use thick-walled exhaust pipe; not just for the longer life, but also because thin-gauge pipe tends to resonate unpleasantly on NA rotaries. I'd actually suggest getting your pipe from Racing Beat even if you don't get their mufflers, since they're a cheap and accessible source for .120" wall mandrel-bent pipe in 2" and 2.5".
