Quick, go check your car

I need to know at what time the light over the ignition switch comes on. Is it when you open the door? Mine wont come on and my dome light wont come on when you open the doors, but it will come on when you turn the switch on the dome light to "on". I believe that the connection for the door switches is broken somewhere. oh yeah it is an 81 gsl Thanks in advance.

You're on the right track, Dennis. The door switches provide ground to the light. Pop them out, you can easily get to the contacts. Try brushing them with a small wire brush.

My ignition light comes on when I open my door and stays on for about 30 seconds.

If everything is working properly, the little light for the ignition comes on when you lift the handle (drivers side only). It's wired with the same circuit as the little drivers side keyhole light is on (if that works, or if you have one).

The door switches on these cars always go bad. Mine works on and off. Contacts in the switch get corroded.

When i got my car the contacts on the doors never worked good either i sprayed the **** with some wd-40 and pushed it in and out a good 20 or 30 times till it went in and out real smooth and that helped a little than i went to RatShack and picked up a small spray can of electonic connection cleaner/lubricator somethin like that spraed it onto the switch and into it and pushed it in and out a shitload of times and now it works everytime

Wel I didnt think it was the door switches because neither door made it come on and they were just working not too long ago, but I found the problem. There is a "computer" under the drivers side storage bin that controls the 30 second key light thingy, any way when I disconnected the huge plug going to it and nothing but white dust came out. so I found the same wire(red with yellow stripe) that comes from the door switches going into this plug so I cut it at both sides of the plug and spliced the two together, All lights work now and there is actually a buzzer that comes on if you open the door with the key in the ignition, AND a bell that dings if you leave the headlights on and open the door. Aint that some ****! I have never heard either! I also replaced one of my speakers today and the motorized antenna. Every thing is working now, however.... Read my post abour my diff.
