question for a newbie!
I have had my 1st gen for about 6 months now and about a week ago I started getting a whining noise from the rear end and it starts @ 3000rpm in 3rd and cresendos up to you hit about 60mph in 5th and then it gets really high pitched and then quiets down a to where it is barely audible. I don't know if any of you guys have had this problem but I searched through the archives and didn't see anything and I looked through some of the threads and searched for it and didn't find anything. I talked to a guy at the parts store and he said possibly flushing the tranny might help but it is coming from the rear end not the center of the car.

Check the oil level in the rearend. If it's too low, it could have messed up one or more bearings. Changing the oil in the rearend may help, but I wouldn't count on it.
Most likely, it's time to rebuild/replace the rear gear.

it's a gsl. The guy we bought it from didn't take care of it so it's been a downhill battle. I will probably just rebuild the rear end. Oh do you guys know if anything in the rear end between the gsl and the se are interchangeable because I'm about to buy a 85 se for $400 that the guy had the car parked for a year and now it won't start so I was gonna try to part some of it and drop a TII in it.
