Sounds like the owner should be driving an auto. I have an SE sitting in the shop and the original owner put 244k on it and never had the tranny touched, 1 clutch in it's long life.

Go buy the car, TOMORROW, don't quibble, pay the man and save it from him. With a new clutch, it's worth over 3k.

Not a problem. If you can, haggle him down as low as he'll go with the "clutch problems"

I too say buy it. I paid 1,400 for my 1984 GSL that has rust in spots and other various little problems, but the engine and transmission were great and so I took it. If it only has 18,000 miles on it then its a steal. Save that car.

And yeah, it sounds like the owner now definitely needs to stay with automatics. There is no reason in the world to be going through clutches like that, and definitely not a transmission with 18,000 miles.

holy crap, this sounds like a awsome deal hottie. I paid 895 for my car and it had a blown motor and a bad clutch and a bad water pump and alt. also a dead battery.

Buy this car and if needed replace the tranny and the clutch. You will really be happy in the long run, esp with such low miles.

Buy it - if you don't, I will..... but unfortunately I live no where near you. If there is no rear quarter panel, rockers or trunk rust, buy buy buy! That low mileage is rare to find for such an old car.

jeez... with only that mileage and that model... might as well buy it and resell it if you don't want it.

I must echo what most of the guys have said already......buy it!!!......youll be the envy of all the guys here!
A 1st gen with only 18,000 actual miles is a R-A-R-E find.Thats nothing,NOTHING....as far as mechanical wear and tear is concerned.Having a factory clutch fail any time that soon just tells me he really doesnt know how to drive. That is the proof you need to tell you that a new clutch, and a new driver.....will be all this car needs to live on for a LONG time.Just to be sure that it hasent had the odometer rolled back, check a few things against the claimed 18K miles. The brake and clutch pedal pads should look like new,no worn edges...same with the steering wheel and shift ****.The floor mats should be pretty decent.See if the milage on the service records is consistant with the dates.

Just be sure to look for time related wear and tear that isnt milage dependant.Things like rust in the rear fenderwells, dry rotted tires and cracked/brittle rubber brake lines.Rust on the wiring sounds odd.If your talking about the big wires that attach to the battery, then its likely just corrosion from the battery acid vapors.....which is completely normal, especially if the car has been sitting. The squealing is probably just the alternator fan belt slipping, also normal if the car has been sitting and the battery was low/dead.

I went to the bank to get a loan for the rest of the money and for my first few insurence payments but they said with this car they can'tcause it's considerded a sports car and i'm 19.

That sucks. A friend of mine had his insurance drop him when he turned 21. They suddenly decided, after nearly 2 years, that he had a sports car. If you can talk one of your parents into putting thier name on the tittle and getting insurance through thier policy, you may be able to work around it.

Not only could that help to aquire the car, but may even result in lower insurance premiums.
In the end, if you cannot find a way to purchase this, pass the info along so someone who would appreciate the car has the chance to do so.

Technically they wouldn't be helping you in doing anything but enabling you get the car. I was in the same boat when I went to buy my first FB. My parents threw me on their insurance, I still paid for everything, and suddenly I could buy it. Its just a means to work your way around the system to get the car you truly want.

Oh and it will definitely lower your insurance premiums.

The more I think about it, the more skeptical I become of it as well. I was never very trusting that it only had 18,000 miles on it considering it already had a transmission rebuild, went through clutches, etc. etc. That all seems ridiculous for only having 18,000 miles on it. Neither of my cars with over 100,000 miles more than that has never had a transmission rebuild.

Don't give up yet, skeptical or not. If the normal wear components show minimal wear, the mileage may be true. If you want the car bad enough, I have confidence you will find a way to aquire it. You appear to be level headed, down to earth young woman beyond your years.

This car is one of the best deals I have seen for a while. It would be a shame it it didn't become your's.

i went through AIS and i got a 6 month policy at 159 for 6 months. i usually just use my car for around town though. This was by far the lowest price i have been quoted but i jumped on it and now my ins is sitting pretty. I would say that if the car checks out (rust and wear) then jump on it. unfortunately however, it sounds like it has way more than 18k miles if it has clutch and tranny problems. i have one with 115k miles and factory clutch that does just fine and my DD has 151k on it and only problem is synchro in second due to previous owner being really really rough on it. other than that it runs like a dream.

the car i posted is now on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1985-...QQcmdZViewItem

id contact him either through the forum or bid on it on ebay. $192 a month is outrageous. look into progressive or go in under your parents. you may also be able to get a lower rate due to the cars age, ask the insurance company about that. my 84 was $350 every 6 months for liability when i was 16.

That sucks to hear about your mom being stubborn and everything. I know the feeling, as my dad was the one stubborn on my end. He eventually caved though. Anyway, if you get an FB and drive it around for a while, you'll definitely be an addict for life. Just look at how many of us own more than one. haha.

Good luck with your search, and I'm sure you can find cheaper insurance as well. I was only paying 88 dollars a month for a Jeep and an '83 Rx7 when I was 21 and that was on my own insurance as well. Its up a bit more since then... as speeding tickets and what have you have increased premiums, but its still no where near that high. I think I am at 66 dollars for just my '84 rx7 right now per month. Oh well, still cheap.
