Power loss when hit 3rd gear

ok when i go to "get on" my 85 with a stock 12A it will do fine in 1st and 2nd gears but while in 3rd gear about 4ooo rpm it just boggs down and dosent want to go anywhere at all but will go past 4000 rpm in 4th gear and i havent had enough room to try it in 5th, is there a problem or do i just not know how to drive, a friend of mine said it could be a govenor but i really dont want to go with what he says cuz im not sure how much he REALLY knows about rx7s. thanks

Your friend has no idea what he's talking about. These cars do not have governors. It sounds like it something is clogged. How long have you owned the car?

Things to change out for smooth acceleration.
1. Change the air filter
2. Distibuter cap plugs and wires.
3. FUEL FILTER << these things are notorious for causing your problem.
4. Remove your Catalytic converter if you do not need to pass emissions. My car would not go past 5k in 3rd because of my clogged catalytic converter.
5. Buy a can of carb cleaner to clean out your carburetor.
Doing these things should make a big difference on how the car performs!

The Catalytic is there for a reason, to prevent ozone death. With that being said however, you drive with a rotary allready :P . Catalytic converters are expensive because of the metals used in them, so its cheaper for you to just replace it with pipe. Alot of the power in your engine will be lost by bad pressure caused by a blocked Cat.

I know with the old thermal reactors, you could tell they were going bad if you could see them GLOWING underneith the car... :P

eskimos,

I was having this same problem in my 81. I changed my cap and rotor and put in a new air filter and it went away. I did not have to put on new wires since they had allready been replaced.

Start with the fuel filter, its the easiest and cheapest to replace, and causes this and similar issues all the time.

Now that I have changed your thread title to reflect the problem. Look at the bottom of the page and you will find 2 related thread on the subject.

This is the classic fuel filter problem.

Spot on boys, definately a fuel starvation problem.

But i'll think you'll find it's the pump not the filter. Change the filter first because it's the cheapest option. BUT i think it'll be your pump mate.

Lettuce know.

Your description of your problem is straight out of the RX7 dictionary under the topic of "what does a clogged fuel filter do". There is no question, it is your fuel filter. Don't come back until you have changed it...
