Power improvements (cheap)...

yeah um i work a minimum wage job and hate it, saving up is real hard for me too, when theres cash in the pocket, im usually spending it rather quickly. i want my damn car to go faster! everyone's always like "oh you have a rotary rx-7, it must be fast" to humor them i say it is, but in my heart i know its not. NOT TO SAY IT WONT BE! because it will, in time.

Rebuild your stock carb, rejet, and remove emissions. Get the power pulse air cleaner from Mazdatrix too with a K&N because the stock one sucks. That'll help you out until you can afford a new carb. Get a better fuel pump and use a regulator too. The stock pump sucks.
Carb upgrades won't make a huge difference until you do exhaust stuff. Direct-fire should be done before the new carb too IMO. And get rid of the stock fan and get electric, best thing you can do.
Just my $.02

okay the only problem about removing emissions is the fact that i live in CA and emissions matter here more than anywhere else, so if anyone can find that its NOT illegal to modify emissions, then im up for doing it. also with the whole direct fire thing, i know for a fact im not going to be doing it myself, if i do it at all, but i've read forums and how to's and all that and i still dont understand it. haha. go figure. i have a new reg. i think its off a mitsu, and the fuel pump is old and shold be replaced, and i want a K&N anyway, so yeah i really have a lot ahead of me. i apprecite the help 12a!

I was just doing performance research today. Some small, third party company is making something they call the spiralmax. It is supposed to create a vortex going into the carb to better vaporize the fuel. Website is Spiralmax.com. They say that 7's have been tested with the spiralmax. It's a simple installation that just fits right into the air filter assembly.

Hey everyone, I am new to this forum, and was just checking out your post's. Lot's of good idea's, but, you forgot one thing, Freebies. Lose anything you don't use or need, A/C alone is worth about 30 lbs. Also. Sub zero start assist, cruise, exhaust heat shields, Charcole canister, Etc., Etc... Also remember this. Little thing's add up. If you can replace a bolt with a zip tie, do it. (obviously, use discression on that last one) I wouldn't try to hold my rad. in with zips, but those little metal tabs that hold wires in place, that are bolted to the body, lose em' all. Decide what you want your car to do, if you just want all out performance, there's easilly 75-100 lbs. of interior that does nothing but look good. If you want to live on the edge a little, get rid of the spare, jack, and tools. (I did this, but I keep an can of fix a flat with me, F A F doesn't fix all punctures though, you could get stranded- wich really sucks- beleive me)
Anyway, there's more but that's all that comes to mind right now. Hope this helps. Later!

Airflow is my life
xcmav66 Dont waste your $ on that. It doesnt produce any increase in airflow. It increases you gas milage by restricting the intake flow. For less $ you could mod your airbox with my airbell which is proven on my flowbench to increase the Carbs CFM. I bought and tseted the "Tornado" which is the same thing as what your asking about. I reduces airflow. PROVEN on my flowbench.

Welcome to the forum. You are correct. I made a general post about losing weight off the car, but your detailed statement should get some people thinking, and as you stated, its a matter of how far your willing to go. Good post for a new guy.

I have rejetted my carb. Using a pin-vise and bits from Lee Vally tools.. (35buck canadian) eazy job! Noticable power too! I have a Sable electric Fan just waiting to go in. I too got rid of the rats nest, and air pump. I have an after market air cainster (wide open 360') for my K&N. I have the RB underdive pully set up, and I seemed to notice a bit of preformance once I bolted them in... My motor is streetported w/ RB header and exaust. I like the power.. Of coarse would like more! I will be getting a fuel pump and regulator, But any thoughts on putting in O2 sensors so I can tune the Carb correctly?

You can put EGT which will tell you the temp of the exhuast which in turn tells you the A/F mix. The hotter the the exhaust the leaner the mix and vice verse. Do some research and you will find the ideal temp for your exhaust. When you install the bung for the oxygen sensor, put it as close to the engine as possible. with in reason.

thricerx7: Do the K&N, also instead of buying an RB frisbee, punch many holes as big as you can make them, 1" is ideal, in the air filter assembly. Do the Direct Fire Ignition! figure it out. The electric fan conversion should be done too. Learn to keep your eye on you temp and use a fiero gt elec fan and zip tie it to you rad. With emissions your fucked! You NEED headers to produce anything fun? Or being emissions legal you got to big Bucs and convert to a13bt or Rx-8 engine?

To all the CA rotorheads: All this exhaust related smog worry may not be so bad. My best bud had an '86 and would just swap the stock manifold, pipes, and muffler back on and pass through easy. A lot of other mods are a bind, but (for him) not exhaust. Even more, the oem exhaust equip stayed in great condition because it had barely any miles on it. a few new gaskets, and that's about it. any thoughts on this? (haven't tried it myself though.)

I'm planning to run a 10lb steel flywheel on my next 12A, a nice bridgeport.
Should rev and accelerate like crazy then.
Be sure to have a balaced setup though (use the front counter-weight from an auto too), you don't want one of these thing sto blow up.

Remember that Holley's, Weber's, etc are completely illegal in CA - just like removing the rat's nest.
Look at the Yaw carb, or Sterling, or whoever else mods the stock carb. Get a decent flowing catalytic converter.
Porting can help a good deal - opening the intake and exhaust ports to 1974 port sizes won't hurt emissions (with a catalytic converter anyway) and is completely undetectable.
